When I read this article, my mind immediately imagined a glowing bekko bachi.

Wow, that is wild stuff. Don’t show it to the bachi makers though, or they just might try hunting them down.
Though it’s not bekkou, a colleague of mine has recently been dabbling with inserting lights into anything shamisen related: Itomaki, doukake, inside the dou, and yes, the bachi.
Hmm a raspberry pi inside the dou…
Dude, LEDs in the dou would be sick! You could program it to change colors every time you struck the kawa. Haha!
That bachi is cool. You could also dye ito in glow in the dark colors instead of yellow. I know they have guitar strings with coatings like that.
Black light reactive ito would be pretty cool and simple with dye. I built a prototype of a hit triggered LED system using a piezo sensor and arduino for my taiko group that worked really well. Can’t wait to get that into a show. You could build something similar to that with a film piezo under the koma that lights up with the intensity of the strike. Or could even control color shifts if you use RGB LEDs. I bet the itomaki on the Sakura shamisen in the store would look real good lit with a small LED on the narrow side.
This is some sweetness here! Wish the lighted Bachi and Dou and itomaki etc. were thought of a long time ago. I wouldve totally got into that stuff while I was doing my Rock/Metal Shamisen band (like almost ten years ago! Woa!)
