Well I just saw this video over at MemeBase and I felt it applies to your request. It’s also funny. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=0t71cexWzvM
woohoo . . . close to what I’m looking for
since I just watched it still recovering from my cold gonna stay home tomorrow too and to keep this thread off topic war games anyone?
Hi BH,
I heartily recommend:
Anything by Kurosawa (especially Yojimbo and The Seven Samurai)
For more ‘ninja-action’ type mvies you can’t go wrong with The Hunted:
Also, The Last Samurai with Tom Cruise is actually pretty good. Ken Watanabe rocks!
Plus it has ninja who actually look like they’re using taijutsu!
Man, I’m such a geek!
Enjoy!
If you like samurai movies you should definitely watch Lonewolf and cub movies there are like 5 parts or something … They are awesome
I agree on Ortjo’s suggestion. There are some american dubbed versions that combines parts of those movies. One is called Shogun Assassin and is pretty fun.
Anime: Samurai Champloo is a nice anime with the classic japanese rivalry between two characters. Of course you can’t miss Basilisk which not only has epic characters and epic violence, but also epic music.
But the most realistic ninjutsu movies you’ll ever see are the American Ninja movies.
hey thanks for the suggestions (last link not working Matt) I shall explore youtube some more too I thought it would probably be a waste of time . . .
so maybe there is some good stuff out there on the other hand Terence Hill in a ninja movie is also a great find I should probably dig out those Stephen Hayes books I bought at the local supermarket when I was a kid and see if my fingers might have become more flexible through playing the sem . . .
(definitely a great book is essence of ninjutsu by hatsumi available at amazon)
anyway hey this clip is actually cool not to mention it features a hot kunoichi
Happy Halloween everyone . . .
Awesome stuff there guys! The video with the 9 kuji-in (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kuji-in) is pretty awesome, lol.
I am a practitioner of Ninjutsu (also known as Bujinkan), and most movies you find are not at all accurate, but there are some that have been choreographed by Hatsumi Masaaki, in which case, the combat is accurate to the traditional fighting styles.
My dojo produces a ninja blog ( http://www.youtube.com/user/NinjaLearningNetwork ) if you ever want to check it out. If you look hard enough, you’ll find me on there!
The hand gestures (a lot of people associate them with Naruto and what-not) are a lot of fun, and meant to be body and mind triggers that help you meditate and access the elements that each one of them embodies.
There is one movie I recommend for sure, Shinobi no Mono; it was choreographed by the Bujinkan’s grandmaster.
Hey Grant,
Shinobi no Mono is a classic!
Where do you study Bujinkan taijutsu? I used to study myself until a year or so ago. I had to travel quite a distance to get to the dojo and I just couldn’t afford the train fare and the weekly training costs. I always try and keep the basic kamae and kihon happo in mind though.
These days I’m studying Kempo jujitsu, which is at a local club and therefore more affordable for me. I do miss the taijutsu though.
awesome I suggest a shamisen ninja subforum . . .
as far as I looked it up the first two of this series were with hatsumi and takamatsu involvement and they are on youtube too . . . woohoo . . .
also I will look for some of the suggestions on dvd I fell behind with watching the movies and clips so I have a whole bunch to look forward to so again thanks everyone!
as for me I am just a humble holder of an orange judo belt acquired as a kid and after two knee surgeries (soccer and hockey of all things) stayed away from further training although some could be possible I guess . . . anyway as for ninjutsu I have a profound respect and liking for it which I guess is no surprise after reading essence of ninjutsu, values for a new millennium and jack hoban articles, understand good play and I seriously gonna dig out the one with the kuji by stephen hayes . . . NOW
May I advice you not using your fists? It would suck to not being able to play the shamisen
just watched Nitaboh movie, its great i enjoyed it,is it based on true story??? thanks for that
Eric Davis,
Thanks for mentioning the film Birth of California Shamisen. I will drop filmmaker Nao Nakazawa a line and guilt trip him into making the film available here on this site as long as it`s OK with mr. Abbott!
Sid and Everyone (regarding Nitaboh)
Yes! One of my favorite films about the history of Tsugaru Shamisen.
Beautifully done and Agatsuma sans playing is Amazing as always. As far as it
s historical accuracy there are a few things to keep in mind.
The Bosama culture of over 100 years ago which forms the historical basis of the Nitaboh film and story was almost completely wiped away in terms of any records and historical facts about that time period. There was a purposeful forgetting of the past which overwhelmed the people of Tsugaru who regarded having a Shamisen playing bosama in their family lineage to be Shameful. Thus what we know about the actual Nitaboh is almost …well… to put it plainly Nothing.
We know there was a Shamisen player named Nitaboh who indeed lived and probably had some influence on the emerging music of Tsugaru Shamisen but I think what we have today is probably 99% legend and fantasy.
IN my opinion the story of Nitaboh is the story of ALL the poor destitute Shamisen players who lived in the snowy region of Tsugaru and who struggled with blindness and opression. And so focusing on one of them and calling him
NITABOH is more of a way to put a face on an otherwise faceless story… and although we may not know who the real Nitaboh was the story of his struggle is more or less true in the sense that Shamisen players in those days really were poor and practiced their asses off in the middle of raging snowstorms because that was their only way to survive!
But of course, my dear sir! If you get permission and stock, I’d be happy to offer them here! It was a nice film, and always wondered why it was never available on DVD or anything.
Talk about reviving an old thread…
Sorry but the link above was not working for me so I decided to put a new one.
Not sure if everyone has seen this yet but in case you haven’t , I recently noticed the “Entire film” has been uploaded. and with German subtitles nonetheless !!!
Highly recommended animation from Japan all about the birth and early history of the mysterious music we now call Tsugaru Shamisen.

Although I am not too pleased with the idea of offering the whole movie for free on YouTube, still it is a great chance for us here on bachido to watch and enjoy the full length story.
Thank you for the full anime, sir Kevin. This is what I have been wondering how to get access. I saw as far as I can on U tube.
looks like you might lose your nighthood ‘Sir Kevin’ ;)… the movie seems to have gone.
Oh wow. It just got taken down by the user.
great film, especially the aiya bushi and jongara bushi at the end!
I have it as an mp4 but it might be abit big to send to people (now the vids gone down)
. . . damn . . . wtf did I get here just a couple of hours too late . . .
Don’t mind me. I was just passing by.
