Shamisen in France ?

You mean truly hand made (chisels, etc) or power tools vs. C&C? According to Isono san, most shamisen makers use power tools (saws, sanders, routers) to make a majority of shamisen, while still using blades for very fine work (like the square hole, kakuana, in the dou).

Yes i mean truly hand made , even if i’m getting used to some really good power tools , i learn to work with a luthier who is actually in love with power tools and making tools , i was really disapointed at first , but then i realized that even if the guy is like this , i will do as i wish in my shop and the good point is that i learn to use big machinery like jointer , band saw and router . the jointer is amazing but i’m crying like a baby everytime i have to use it , really it scares the hell out of me , the router is amazing too , when i have to craft a bending maching for my guitar , it has to be perfectly shaped so i use the router . the band saw makes you win some time , but in the end the thing i enjoy the most is using my chisels , hand plane and Japanese saw wich is ten times better than the band saw !

In the end you are absolutely right , when you’re making a living out of it you have to think about what could make you eat a meal in the end of the day and what can make you smile everytime you go in the shop , if you are only doing it for money , you lost , the key is to find a compromise between hand made and machine made , machinery is here to help us , not to work for us , this is my point of view , i use power tools only to help me do what the power tool will probably do better than me, but most work requires to use hand tools and it’s a very fun stuff to do . Power tools can be very fun to use , never try a wood lathe ?

Use Rosetta Stone Japanese and we’ll talk about it again in 3 years or earlier!

You mean the book to learn languages ? 3 years ? damn it took me ten years to speak very little English and to watch every Hitchcock in English and you’re saying that i can learn to speak Japanese in 3 years ? Kyle , it’s hard to believe for me !

Whooaaa!!! That Potpourri of an instrument in the poster for SALON DE LUTHERIE is wild! Do you think it’s real or photoshopped? It sounds like a really cool event.

I think it is photoshopped , but you can see some weird stuff like this in some luthier gathering , i need to build me a laboratory so i can take the DNA of a Shamisen , a guitar , a pipa , an erhu and a morin khuur and make it a whole new instrument muhahah !

…but in the end the thing i enjoy the most is using my chisels , hand plane and Japanese saw wich is ten times better than the band saw !

Yeah, I agree. It slows life down as well. Being how fast life speeds along, slowing down is always a good thing, I think.

“Speak very little english.” Your current English level is excellent!! It’s a very difficult language, I would say. Kanji can be very challenging in the beginning, but it all makes more sense in the end, I think.

Speaking of wierd, wild instruments. A friend came over yesterday and showed me this video. Apperantly the guy used to study engineering but quit because he couldn’t express his creativity. All the “instruments” are made from power tools. Gives new meaning to the genre term “Industrial”.

Ho yes we all should take the time to live and enjoy shaving some wood by hand  !
Well i do my best but i should really work but i don’t motivation right now, i’ll take a look at the books to learn Japanese anyway it’s been a long time since i wanted to learn a new language and it might be helpfull .

Wow this instrument is amazing , definitely gives a new meaning to industrial music  !

If you’re able to get your hands on the Rosetta Stone program or the Pimsleur series, you should definitely try them out. They’re the best resources .

i’ll check it out , thank you for the advices  !

Did you use rosetta stone by the way or an onine program?

I used Rosetta Stone. Really, really realllllllly useful.
Of course, meeting Masako increased my vocabulary even faster, but that’s beside the point.

Interesting , i should check this book out , even if it’s not cheap at all , i hope there is a french edition.

By the way , i just tried to tie a Neo with a shoe lace , about 1 meter and 10cm … my hand hurts and my lace looks like and hair ball from a cat’s stomac :frowning:

I also used Rosetta Stone! It helped me gain a real feel for Japanese. Most of the vocabulary I’ve picked up just through immersion in Japan and taking a couple classes, but I’m more than certain that the program is half the reason I can pick up things quickly.

Years ago Mike Penny and I met someone from France in Hirosaki who was playing Tsugaru Shamisen and was quite good. I don’t remember his name or info at all now but he was a younger fellow, maybe early 20s and said he was just visiting Japan. I wonder if this guy is still around (and who he is).? Anyone in France heard of someone matching that description?

I just checked Amazon , there is a french edition for learning Japanese with Rosetta Stone , only costs 556€ (700$)… Since i need to start my shop i will get the book when i have sold some guitars i guess.

Kevin , i’ve never heard of this guy , but i really think that there is much more shamisen player here than i think and probably some that don’t know bachido.com . I heard there was some Shamisen lessons close to where i was born , and Keisho Ohno gives lesson there when he comes in France , i guess we need to convert theses guys to bachido.com
