Well but seriously though. When my metal band God of Shamisen used to tour and play festivals I always kind of thought of this tune as our shows climax so I guess personally I would consider this one, even though it’s with a band and not solo, to be a show off piece of sorts.

Man, it would be so great to have you as a teacher. I recently listened to Traveler Attack from Dragon String Attack and together with this song I’m really impressed with your compositions. You really seem to be a conduit for expressing music with the shamisen!
Thanks for the encouraging words Karl. Looking forward to any suggestions you might have for the new recording Kyle was talking about. Liked your idea about vocalist (different singing styles) and agree with you and Kyle ! It’s going to be pretty exciting for both of us and I am sure we will be keeping in touch with everyone here in July when we head up to Sapporo.
Yeah i enjoyed this song too… I haven’t listened to God of shamisen much yet but this encourages to listen more of you guys rly nice playing!
I am sure we will be keeping in touch with everyone here in July when we head up to Sapporo.
Hell, when we’re in Sapporo, we’ll set up a freakin’ Live Feed!
Seriously though, perhaps that would be an especially ideal time to do the online chat, which Stev Jung had suggested. I’m sure Masahiro would love to see you guys, and y’all would like to talk with him too. It’d be an inspiring experience for everybody.
Btw, not to change subjects, but has anyone tried Google Hangout? Papa suggested that for the online Bachido meetups.
Wow~
This thread really took off eh~
Everyone seems to have pretty good show-off pieces.
I, unfortunately do not (>_
That’s totally understandable. I always feel uneasy about playing/singing anything I’m not confident with.
Interesting! Is your song written for shamisen?
1~2 years! Whew… You just need some good ol’ tequila. That can help bring out the inner-rock star in you!
lol yea but you also have to keep in mind the people in my playing circle
When I compare myself to the people around me, it becomes painfully aware of the gap in skill.
I heard ‘R’ play the opening of Rokudan the other week and was Floored by the gap between him playing it, and every other person I have ever heard play it.
It makes it tough to just go out and play lol.
As for my song, yea I wrote it for shamisen.
I am actually working on another one now, but rather than being progressive songs, they are more “loop and chorus” based songs
So while played on shamisen, dont always give the shamisen feel and sound
Interesting… Waiting to hear from it Norm
Talking about this live performing… I’m planning to go busking at summer to close cities here in finland. Did you know that you need permissions from the city or the police to go busking??? well i asked the police about it and they said it’s nowadays actually city’s business… So i need to get permissions from the cities close to me
But Finland has yet to seen much of shamisen so i think they will allow me and maybe i’ll even get some money while doin it
(sorry my text seems to be a bit cryptic but maybe you’ll manage)
Ortjo,
Good luck with your busking!! Shamisen of Finland! Wow!
Tell us some stories about it after you start getting out there!
Norm,
Yeah please post your tune when its done (tunes). I`d love to hear the stuff
everyone here is working on. Especially here on this “Showoff” thread!
Thanks Kevin will do!
Norm: Aaaah I see what you mean. Man, comparing yourself to a star is very demoralizing, but almost impossible to ignore if he is in the same room and you can’t help but compare yourself side-by-side with him.
Again, whiskey.
Sweet! Looking forward to hearing the piece!
Ortjo: It’s the same case in Santa Cruz. They have “ordinances” and things to give police/business legitimate reasons to kick out an obnoxious player (which is bad for business), but they will conveniently when there is a good/pleasing player/band.
Kevin: How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
lol yea it can be a little rough~
I am now working on 3 original pieces lol
All of which I am unsure of when I will finish~
But I will be glad to put one or two up here once they are done
The main one could not sound less "tsugaru shamisen"ish if I tried lol
But sitting down with ‘R’ the other day, we talked about writing songs in the spirit of Tsugaru Shamisen, and so I am working on 2 new pieces.
Once again, I will need time, and at least some half-decent recording equip before I post them, but im really glad that everyone was so interested. Thanks guys, its really motivating~
As I am still working on gathering footage from around Tokyo to splice into a guest episode of Bachido I am working on, I might just wait and introduce one or two of my songs (or at least segments of them) during that episode.
And now I’m starting to ramble, and so I will stop here lol
I’m looking forward to hearing those compositions as well! When they are done I think a great bachido episode for the community could be that you explain the process of writing those songs.
