Anyone know what Suzuki Shamisen should sound like?

So I’ve been searching around for a Jiuta or a Nagauta on Rakuten, AKA the Japanese Ebay, but I keep seeing that most of the Shamisen are made from Suzuki, the same company that makes the 4 shaku size Koto, and the drifting cars. But they are all described as using “Synthetic leather”. So my question is, is the skin good quality? Like, has anyone ever played a Suzuki Shamisen? And if so, what was your opinion on the sound quality?

That’s a good question. I have a strong feeling they’re below-entry level, but I am curious about the sound too.

I noticed on Rakuten, they were cheap, but on Amazon, they were overpriced. Ah well, there is always those antique shamisen on eBay. Those are of good quality depending on the pictures and description.

I would hesitate to buy an “Antique” Shamisen. Of course there are many skilled instrument builders with Great experience and skill in repairing old instruments so I am not trying to say anything negative or discouraging if you think you can do something with it but it is my understanding that unlike violins (such as Stradivarius etc.) shamisens generally do not age well. An old Shamisen basically just means a crappy Shamisen. But again, I am sure for those talented craftsmen/women out there it might provide an interesting challenge.

Well, you really have to look at the pictures. Some have broken skins, some don’t. The ones on eBay seem to be from late Showa era, around late '80’s to '90’s. The sale page tells you the condition they are in on ebay, telling every single detail, from the smallest scuff. The ones on eBay seem newer than the antique ones on Rakuten going for 60 dollars. I think the 60 dollar ones on Rakuten have seen the coronation of 2 emperors haha

WROOOOOOOOOOOOM?

Sorry. I just had to be silly.

xD That made me laugh. I guess a Suzuki Shamisen would be good for drifting
