Bachido Blogcast E1

This week’s episode of the Bachido Blogcast (new name): How to hold a shamisen.

I just ordered pizza and red wine so I will wait and then sit back and enjoy this . . .

Kyle, I think this is as good as you can explain the holding of a shamisen on video.

I haven’t tried sitting on my knees while playing. It may make the pants more stretched as the thigh is compressed. Will try if it matters.

another great episode . . . good explanation and voice . . .

I think it might be better to create a page or sticky post with all the episodes so they don’t get out of sight scattered around in the forum though

good video thanks Kyle

Thanks Kyle. This Bachido Blogcast is a great idea. Huzzah for the Abbott brothers!

Dedicated “Bachido Blogcast” page with episode index is coming pretty soon (though I have yet to start work on it).

I thought so that you already planned on doing so of course . . . an index would be nice yes with maybe nevertheless posting the clip on the forum so one can comment and get well Kyle or you may enjoy the following recipe anyway . . .

(since I am always high on supradyn vitamins or was lacking some ingredient on other occasions actually it’s been a while but I am pretty sure it goes as follows)

  • BIG shot of whiskey (6 cl or so)

  • juice of one orange

  • juice of half a lemon

  • while heating this up on in a cooking pot on the stove (careful not to cook it) stir in the last ingredient an (also rather big) soup spoon of honey . . . drink hot enjoy . . . (which would be “Ina’s Good Night Drink” courtesy of Martina)

oh the whiskey would be bourbon not scotch although that might be a matter of taste also in the case of this recipe . . .

I will admit I struggle with this, I can hold the shamisen in the right place with the natural weight of my right arm, but I can’t switch from maebachi to ushirobachi without supporting the neck with my left arm :frowning:

having the same problem  though i’ve had problems all along with ushiro and maebachi though i have been thinking… could it be harder to do on Nagauta because its smaller? ( still doesn’t change the fact i just fail it :D)

Wow, Kyle san, you can really play shamisen without your left hand holding sao, that’s impressive!

By the way, I noticed that males and females often hold shamisen different ways - guys tend to keep sao’s postion slightly lower. I was wondering what you would like to say about this…

Even we recorded ourselves and I noticed Brian ( my partner ) keeps the sao a lot lower. It was interesting, because unless we did this recording, we would’t have a clue we hold shamisen different way!

Anyway, thanks for the great vid!

Hey dudes,

Try slightly resting the top corner on your ribs. That’s the only way I can keep it stable. If I didn’t have it there, the shamisen would slip a bit when doing bachizuke.

Would you guys like it if I refilmed it again in more detail? I.e, a close-up of it on my ribs 'n such. It’ll be no trouble.

I’m not gonna turn down free advice from the pro

I really liked the original “Bachi TV” name (-_-)

Go ahead Kyle! I would appreciate it (if it really is no problem :D)

Thanks for making this video! It’s a big help. I’m gonna practice, but there’s still a part of me that thinks it’s just magic.

If you do make another more detailed video, can I request a shot from the sides so we can see the angle of the sao from the body?

good addition Jamie

Jamie - Will do.

おおきに!
