yeah that looks cute and also at first sight already conveys a very inviting glimpse of that there is a serious amount of contents on the site too . . . so I would get a good and “grander” first impression of this site than earlier and would be happy to click on . . .
Yeah, the earlier version was before the community got established, and felt a lot of explaining had to be done. Now, with a rock solid congregation, no explanation is needed. 
Also, the community is sure to grow much larger without the big picture of that really sketchy looking dude. This is much more welcoming, I agree with the others.

Just kidding, I agree. The plan for the slideshow has been in the hopper since Episode 4 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhSA2Q8Db2c&feature=player_detailpage#t=301s) , with the goal of making the site more approachable and accessible. At last, it’s finally done.
For those who want to contribute, I’m still accepting pictures to make the slideshow even larger.
I think the store startpage got a picture of the same dude now but that is at least a serious picture that conveys something that defies description in just a few mere words . . .
