Bamboo koma question

Please excuse my ignorance. I have a nagauta shamisen. Is the bamboo koma you sell compatible? I am not aware if nagauta koma are sized differently from tsugaru koma, though I believe they are the same… Thanks!

For what I know the tsugaru koma would be a bit lower and typically of different material (bamboo vs bone). Possibly slightly wider too?

Does it really make a big difference? Probably not for a beginner…

The sound is different due to the material. The nagauta koma is ivory, bone or plastic, I think. The height is not so different as there is not standard height.

I use a Bamboo (Tsugaru) koma on my nagauta and I love it. There’s an explanation of the bridge differences and sounds on the store page, I think.

Hi Tom! The material/size will change the tone, but not for better or for worse (unless you’re going for a specifically specific aesthetic). Just like Kyle Aaron, I use tsugaru koma on my Beginner’s Shamisen and am very satisfied with the tone. (Maybe it’s a “Kyle thing” )

To me, it doesn’t really matter that much. The tsugaru koma is much lower. I bought a jiuta bachi (by mistake) on eBay, and it came with a lovely jiuta koma. It’s REALLY big, and it has the weights on it, but I think it sounds just fine on my nagauta.

Some people carve their own komas! My friend Cana has a really cool looking one that he made out of a twig. He has posted soundbites of his nagauta and it has a lovely warm retro sound.

Hello, newbie here with nagauta shamisen. I have both plastic and bamboo koma from the Bachido store, and I think I prefer the bamboo. I can’t put my finger on it, but it sounds much prettier.

Minasan! Arigatou gozaimasu! Glad to hear of your experiences with bamboo. The shamisen I purchased came with both a plastic and a bone koma, so I figured I may as well get a bamboo one too so I can have a good variety to play with. New instruments are always like play. Asobimashiyou!
