Classical music on Shamisen.

Oh yeah, Kevin, I meant to say this earlier but… That chamber piece is remarkable. You got some serious composition chops.

Thanks Chet!

Oh by the way since I started talking to Karl H. In Sweden about future scoring out of stuff for Shamisen I realized that one of the main reasons I wanted to start this topic was the following piece , the Bach cello suite. I had meant to include it at the start of this thread…anyway it’s almost all eight notes with some quarter notes thrown in so the counting out and spacing should be a cinch for scoring it out. Anyway another Bach to add to the classical (baroque , in this case) music interpreted on the Shamisen…
(forgive the horrible nihongo at the start. )

Sorry to skip this…

I kept having trouble posting here, it kept going to the last thing I had added. Well anyway the Bach cello prelude is below!

ooo pretties, works so well.

Damn that was good, I’ve never heard that kinda tone on a shamisen before, it sounds like a different instrument in certain parts

If you guys want to hear a better recording of Kevin playing this, I can recommend the first Monsters of Shamisen CD which is available on Spotify.

Btw Kevin, do you or Masahiro actually get any money from Spotify? I should be contributing with a very small amount each time I’m headbanging at work. The shamisen music is limited to Monsters of Shamisen, God of Shamisen, Masahiro Nitta, Yoshida Brothers and Hiromitsu Agatsuma, so people who like shamisen should be listening to all of those.

Thanks Karl, got your PM, looking forward…
Hey I found a much better example of the Bach piece I want to transcribe. Prelude frm cello suite. It’s a better version cause you can see the hand positions and don’t have to hear my terrible Japanese at the start. I want to transcribe this with Shamisen Composer after some of the cd tunes are done.

So beautiful! Feels like dreaming.
Oh,my! Sorry for my slow reading and going through the whole thread so roughly. I finally could reach here. I am not as familiar with western classics as everyone else here, but all those tunes are very attractive. Above all, Bach is my favorite. Last year I was mainly playing Bach on guitar, because being unable to find Tsugarushamisen teacher around my area. So it would be so nice if I get a chance again to play Bach on Tsugarushamisen.
And Kevin san, your Japanese is not bad at all. Sugoi ojoozu desu!

wow that was weird to have such a noble musical score as background for having breakfast just after getting up in the morning I don’t usually listen to classical music but that had something to it  anyway very nice and great performance . . .

wow that sounds amazing

Hey Kevin, sometime we should do a duet with Shamisen/Mandolin. I’ve learned the whole Cello Suite No 01 Prelude thingy on the 8-string.

Kyle, that’s a great idea. I can also hear some other instruments, like someone strumming a chordal accompaniment.

Yeah, maybe even a cello.

Actually, I think we could even make a CD with just shamisen and mando. Listening to NITTA X OYAMA’s Karma CD (which has nothing but just two shamisen) inspired me that with the right songs, good players and good sounding instruments, a VERY easy-listening album can be made with just two instruments.

Haha. Somehow I seem to have missed these last words from Kyle. I was laughin cause it would be ironic to play a “cello suite” on Shami and mando and have "cello"accompaniment mixed in.
Anyway just to say… If you were ever into doing a duo recording with mando and Shami I would be totally into it! Maybe next year I can take a week to head out to Santa Cruz to do it! I think maybe just a short collection of tunes and offer it digitally on the site? Like people can buy and download a tune and if they dig it we might have a few more available. Seems doable!

Haha! Yeah, maybe we could have it bow the final note or something, as a little cameo appearance.

Definitely!! You know, this is a song I would love to play/record on shamisen (which would take the Oud part). Complete with the double reed 'n everything. What do you think?

Needless to say, Karl’s notation maker would be invaluable for this.

Lovely, hypnotic song. But that’s Sufi music for you. I may have to learn this one myself on setar maybe. Thanks for introducing it, Kyle.
