Customs Questions

I tracked my shami online and it says it’s been “handed over”. Looking this up, I found out that this could mean that customs has it.

Even though I requested the broken skin be taken off it was already sent out before the message got to the ebay seller and I’m wondering what could happen if everything goes wrong (I looked up HM and Customs in the UK and it says dog and cat skin is illegal to import, but there are UK and EU members here that have their shamisen and didn’t need to change the kawahari.)

Do I need a permit to own it even though I’m taking the dog skin off anyway? How did EU and UK members get permission to own their instruments or did they even need to go through the process? I’m getting kinda worried here.

How long has it been “handed over”? In Sweden ALL foreign packages get handled at the airport by customs. You are sent a letter with the fee you must pay. Maybe you have a letter on the way as well?

I don’t think the skin would be the problem, as the particular kind of skin is not easily identifiable. Also, from my understanding, when the skin is raw, it is illegal to import. But when it is connected to the instrument, it becomes piece of a traditional culture, and thus should be fine.

As Karl says, maybe it has something to do with paying an import fee.

I contacted the seller again and they said that it would take 8 - 12 weeks for over land shipping. It’s now been 10 days and the tracking only just started a few days ago when I was away from home so I don’t know how long it’s been handed over. It’s most likely referring to the border and customs for another country along the route and that they’re currently processing it but I don’t know why Royal Mail isn’t being more specific.

I wouldn’t worry about it Laura. Customs have no idea what a shamisen is or that its made from dog/cat skin. Someone sent me an old Ivory bachi and it still got through customs.
Royal Mail isn’t being specific because Royal Mail are s**t.

Laura, i’ve had many experiences with UK customs. Handed over usually just means that your shamisen has been handed over to the postage service at the other end and that it’s being sent to their international hub.
NOTHING to panic over m’dear and tbh UK customs wouldn’t know dog or catskin if it hit them over the head repeatedly and made an ekky ekky percheng noise.

BTW- welcome to bachido <3

To be honest I’ve had worse service from the Post Office.

Once ordered £40 worth of faux fur fabric from a UK company for a college art project and it was allegedly delivered on a bank holiday when everyone was in the house at a time of the day when everybody was awake, to somebody that signed it with a messy scribble of letters ending in “Smye”. And something similar happened with two attempts to get miracle berry tabs from Macedonia just before summer break.

I know they’re a subsidiary of Royal Mail, but that’s still seriously sloppy. Also during the waiting time for my fur delivery there was a case on the news about a Post Office Delivery Worker not delivering packages and keeping them for himself. So I wouldn’t be surprised if that or something similar happened to my stuff. Theft in their Warrington sorting office is why my parents don’t send cash in birthday cards anymore.

Anyway, the status changed to “Advised”. Still really vague. Guess I should’ve just gone with the more expensive and quicker air mail, eh?

More time to figure out how I’m going to get the stretching materials for the re-skin, though.

Customs seriously can’t detect dog or cat skin? I dunno whether that’s something to laugh or gasp at. Guess I’ll do both, lomg.

And thanks for the new welcome, Amanda.

I’m hoping to set up a small event at some point once I get good enough. I dunno the street performance laws for most other cities but apparently here, Glasgow and Manchester you can just set up and have a go.

hey laura, decided on what skin to get yet?
And us UK peeps REALLY should organise a get together at some point now there’s more of us

I asked at my local music shop if they had unmounted drum or banjo heads and they didn’t have them but suggested I get a bigger mounted head and cut the skin from that. It might actually be a good idea considering having it pre-stretched will help make it easier to stretch even tighter, plus it opens up the option of using some Remo “fiberskyn” heads and see how they sound.

Failing that, I’ve been looking up some skin alternatives that I could test out. What’s especially got me interested is synthetic tattoo practice skin. Most ones to buy I’ve seen online have been too thick and not stretchy enough. But my sister had some when she was in training and they looked thinner and stretchier so if I find some more like that, it could work out really well! If it doesn’t, there’s some white faux snakeskin made out of stretchable vinyl I could try if I cut off the loose fabric backing. Could end up making it look like a hybrid sanxian, but so far I’ve not seen any faux white leather that’s had a fabric backing I could cut off.

I don’t mind using real skin (that isn’t dog, cat or reptile), but considering the drastic temperature and humidity changes the UK has on a regular basis, it’s just a lot more convenient to have something I don’t have to worry about rupturing as much.

Plus my sister hates using animal products for aesthetic reasons. Even leather. She’s threatened to destroy my shamisen if I don’t take the dog skin off in the alley next to our house (out of sight) as soon as I get it at the door and still greatly dislikes the idea of me using goatskin or calf skin as a replacement kawa.
So yeah. Synthetic is the only way I can really go right now until I get my own place.

At least I can gain some experience with it, eh? Give my feedback on which one works better, record and upload sound samples, etc.

A meet would be cool. I don’t know if there’s any shamisen players in Liverpool (probably only sanxian players) so being able to meet others that want to learn or even to jam with would be epic.

meep, i don’t think you’d get non-musical instrument designed synthetics to work tbh, they have too much stretch in them.
Don’t know anything about synthetic skin for tattooing though, that might be interesting.
Fibreskyn also sounds promising.

For natural skin i have goat as a back-up on my ebay list:

this for me is the only choice if mine goes boom, unless i send it to Jessica in the US

Truth!! As Peter said, the Japan Matsuri in Trafalgar square in October would be a fitting place for y’all to finally get together and have a Bachido jamboree!

London is too expensive and too far away for me to go by myself so soon after my last trip away and during term time. Plus my shamisen isn’t turning up 'til at least late October according to the seller’s estimate (If it does turn up). Damn.

Anyway I looked up the tattoo skins and they don’t come much bigger than 20x30cm so they’re no good. But I looked up the materials they’re made from and found some ebay sellers of white latex rubber with larger dimensions. Not sure how much effort that would take to get the right tension but it’s thinner than the fiberskyn heads and probably wouldn’t sound as “thunky” as a result if done right.
I got some tin cans for when I wanted to make my own kankara. So I can test out how tense I can get the different material types I’ve been considering on those and some bigger tins if my parents don’t mind me buying in those giant ones of baked beans or buckets of mayo from the Chinese supermarket I walk past when I go home from my erhu lessons. Lol.

Would be so convenient to use goat skin. I looked that up when I first considered getting my shami. But I’ve already explained the reasons why I’m better going synthetic first and making sure I’ve exhausted all affordable routes before causing any more stress in the house.

Ah, I see. Well no worries. With so many members in the UK, I’m positive that regular meetings will happen eventually, just like Kyoko, Josh and Pat are doing in Japan. The momentum just needs to get started.

Ah, good idea! You should get in touch with Gerry McGoldrick here. He is the resident expert of kankara.
Also, if you want an affordable, pre-skinned route, you can always try making a kankara neck and sticking it through a small hand drum (like a tambourine drum?). Already has a tight skin on it, so you’d probably get a very satisfying sound and a very low price!

I don’t have the space in my room for a full kankara right now. It was hard enough making some for the shamisen, but I’ll take your advice on board for when I’ve cleared out more stuff and can add more to my growing instrument collection that is the bane of my parents’ nightmares. Lol.

Regarding your order and cusoms… they may not be too hot on the skin, but they will be aware of ivory and tortoise parts!

XD haha true true I received my shamisen and my bekkou bachi no problems from japan. But my package was very small so I would assume they havent checked it properly or just didnt care as they are already apart of an instrument/ or plectrum therefore considered not that big of a deal.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uX63opNNxHc if you would like to see how small the box was.

Another note! It was in some sort of ramen box. So they mightave thought it was a box of noodles perhaps…

I’ve been reading up on it and apparently they could still send it through but remove the skin. Since that’s what I want to do anyway it might actually have a good point of being caught. I guess it also depends on where the post is received considering some places may be more aware of things than others.

Then again Royal Mail was privatized yesterday but the workers aren’t allowed to strike until after it’s done and a bunch of other crap’s going on so that might delay things more.

Update: The status hasn’t changed at all for the past three weeks now. It says it’s being delivered via Express 48 which I’ve read means it’s either being sent via the US or with Parcelforce’s service that’s meant to deliver it within 48 hours. Considering how long I’ve been waiting, I reckon the former. Not sure what US rules are regarding Shamisen deliveries or how strict they are.

Well, hopefully the customs notice I got the other day is for my shami… Either that or it’s my new erhu bow.
Either of 'em would be great to get before the weekend since I’ve got a gig on Tuesday and then everybody else at my course gets to pick new songs. Plus one of the dudes there says he has a balalaika and I reckon it’d sound pretty awesome next to a shamisen once I’ve sorted out what I’m gonna skin it with.
