coming from guitar playing I wanted to know that exactly myself and it took me a while to grasp the concept and get my head around the idea that on a shamisen one does not need one ideal or have one common distance for string separation . . . I think though that at least for tsugaru it is about 9 mm at the koma but definitely on a kamigoma without notches for the strings the separation can vary a bit and also be a matter of taste some for example like to have a bigger distance from the first to the second string and second and third strings closer together or so . . .

I think so yes and if you have a real shamisen . . . of course if you build one yourself from scratch there would be more need to know dimensions and distances for the basic wood pieces . . .
