First Ever Bachido Challenge - Rokudan

Here’s my re-entry.

Despite a energy-draining cold, I set out to continue filming the crash courses. When warming up, I noticed that being in that state did affect my playing interestingly. In a bad way? Not necessarily. Just… different.

Anyhow, here it is!

Dude lame pun incoming…wait…go! - that was SICK! =P
Actually, I really liked the clearer sounds of the smaller accents you put in.
As I play I constantly think about what is the better sounding speed to attempt to play this piece but after watching I realize even more that it’s all about your own feeling, musically and otherwise physically haha.

Nice entry, hope you’re able to beat that cold soon!

Haha  Good playing as always Kyle!

yeah one can actually see that you are playing differently when you’re sick :stuck_out_tongue:

No seeing the difference of sick or not, your play sounded so much matured this time though you are young, Kyle.
Hope the flue is not bothering Californians much.

Yeah! Totally psychedelic as a result of your “cold”!

So here’s a new video from me to keep the ball rollin. It felt really good when I played it, but when I listen to it I don’t hear that much of a difference. New strings too.

Oh my! I see you are wearing the RARE albino Bachido shirt! (available in the Bachido Store! - http://bachido.spreadshirt.com/)

I like the consistent snapping on the ichi no ito (something which can tend to be forgotten about). And as you ‘it felt really good when I played it’, it sounded that way. I mean, each time it sounds more and more confident.

Comparing to your last video, I noticeably detect the confidence/intention when checking the ichi no ito portion.

And for the most perspective, let’s look back earlier to your most memorable contribution.

So, do I notice improvements since your first video? Certainly. Do I notice improvements in your second to last video? Yes, I do. Though the contrast isn’t as obvious as in the beginning, that should be expected.

In my experience, as you get more skill, the difference is more noticeable on the inside than outside (meaning, it will feel better and better though you may not see much difference in playback). Of course, this is a good thing. One day, when you reach a certain point on the inside, it will just flood into your playing to where you’ll see a very noticeable leap in proficiency.
That’s just what I’ve noticed though. The experience might differ depending on the person.

sounds good even that “most memorable” clip . . .

I also see your great improvement, Karl !!! You really have shown Viking spirit(^o^)☆♪

YEAH! Your newest Roku Dan is very Powerful Karl!

So good! I like how you’ve cleaned up your playing! A good inspiration for us all!
Thanks!

Thanks guys! I FINALLY got to end it well at least. Thanks for all the encouragement. Makes me wanna get it even better!

Ladies and Gents,

I was sitting and practicing the other day, when suddenly, I happened to put together this video:

Enjoy~
(Still need to get a better mic)

Fantastic!!! You ROCK, Norm!

Great show Norm! It seems you are more comfortable playing in front of the camera now!

I have to say, those are some swicked itomaki. I’m sure I’ve seen them… somewhere… Gosh, where have I seen them before?.. :-S

My only feedback for your piece: At the very end, you should’ve sang “naaailed it!” in falsetto.

Hi Chris,

Within the next few months, I hope to have individual PDFs of notation available on the website.

You may be interested in my book, Shamisen of Japan, which has notation to 16 pieces in the tsugaru shamisen repertoire, including Rokudan. http://bachido.com/products/shamisen-of-japan

Oh, and welcome to the Bachido Forum!
