Fitness advice

This is a question primarily for TJ, who is getting his certification as a personal trainer. Others may find this question/answer helpful as well. And yes, this is shamisen related. Why? Because I just used the word shamisen right there. And again.

TJ!

So, I started volleyball today. Hadn’t done a class since high school, so it was sooo awesome to get back into it! Of course, my ass got kicked, as I’m in as good a shape as a rotten banana. I know as I do it more, the strength will return, but I did have a question - eating before training.

I never used to eat before any kind of training, especially karate (let’s just say, the urge to take a dump in the middle of sparring is not pleasant). However, I learned that to be my mistake when training 4 hours/day in Japan with only light breakfast/lunch in my tank. (Unintentionally starving myself) which meant each one hour training was incredibly exhausting. (I didn’t know why at the time)

Okay, long story short! To make sure I’m not making volleyball more exhaustive than it needs to be, I want to make sure I have a sufficient amount of food in me (not too much, but more than… nothing)

So, I ask you, how much of what should I have before hitting the beach? Would a few handfuls of peanuts be enough?

Exactly one family-sized pizza.

I wouldn’t go with peanuts before because you will have your throat filled with small peanut chunks which lowers your breathing capability and might cause you to choke while playing if you are unlucky.

I think the general sports diet is to have had a protein and fat filled meal an hour before the activity and then if you need to have a 100% performance you have energy drink and water while playing.

Kyle, I’ve decided. I’m making a video. It will be much easier to explain. I’ll post it when it is finished.

Oooh!! Thank you so much TJ!

Though I’m sorry to say you might be too late. Karl may have already answered my question with his family sized pizza suggestion.

Lol. My camcorder is charging as I type.

one season in particular I had the good furtune of having enough time to go snowboarding like others go to work or in other words I went snowboarding 5 days a week over several weeks and ususally whole days from about 9.30am to 4.30pm with only about a half hour or up to one hour break around noon . . . at this break I drank as much water or juice as thirst suggested often ate a warm ham and cheese toast and afterwards enjoyed relaxing over a cup of black tea with a splash of lemon juice a simple drink that always brings up sort of a snowboarding vibe ever since then even when I have that in the city far away from the mountains . . . very nice . . .

as for breakfast I had a cup of coffee of course, some orange juice and often an american breakfast with bacon and eggs or alternatively about 2 rolls with honey or jam . . .

also usually another coffee (to go) for the 10 to 20 minutes car ride . . . and I took a little plasic bottle half a liter of milk with me to drink up before the lunch break and a couple of candy bars for the whole day . . .

after the day back home I often drank a hot chocolate with a shot of cognac and a little later ate a lot of whatever was usually left over from what my parents had cooked for their lunch or something else they would cook for an early dinner sometimes anyway I ate a LOT of whatever was available . . .

obviously or not this did not come out of any consideration or knowledge about what diet might be best for highest performance but it just tasted good and worked for me . . .

as for the snowboarding I do alpine snowboarding which is about carving and leaning into turns and you can do that with any degree of leaning in and feeling the g-force or so there are some other moves but it’s not about jumps and tricks in general like in freestyle . . . anyway a very cool clip of some guys that do that perfectly and it feels even better than it looks but this already looks awesome . . .

(I guess I felt like sharing my love for snowboarding and related diet especially cause I don’t get to much actual snowboarding these days)

oh my I just discovered that my old youtube channel is still there . . . so there is me in action in the first one and I am the one sporting those cool shades and blue shorts in the second one . . . haha

actually and seriously it is currently quite possible that austria and japan are the countries in which alpine snowboarding is most popular

also, Sigi Grabner, austrian, world champion, did get very active in japan doing camps and stuff and I will surely get up to date as for that in the course of redoing my alpine snowboarding site . . . earlier it was stoked.at and will be at freecarvers.com . . . okay and looking forward to serious fitness advice I could use it

Soon my video will be uploaded. If only youtube didn’t take forever.

Boom

BH: Oh my god!!! After all this time, we finally get a glimpse of the great Austrian taxi driver himself!! Haha!! Swingin’ in on a board, now that was worth the wait!

TJ: Interesting interesting!!! Thanks for your advice, TJ! Preparing the day before, not something I considered but makes complete sense. Yeah, I rarely eat junk food, but I just don’t eat… much anyway. I mean, Bachido work is pretty sedentary, so there hasn’t been much need. Fruit, english muffin and espresso in the morning, coffee in afternoon (and some raisins/dates if feeling like it) and a bowl of homemade soup (really hearty and delicious - tomato base loaded with kale, carrots, potato, onion, lots herbs/spices and more) with cheese/jalepeno melted on a tortilla or something and Newkie beer.

Alrighty! I will keep you apprised of how week to week plays go! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

Gotta say, your brow in 1080i kinda freaked me out in the beginning. :stuck_out_tongue:

Lol. Yeah, no problem. That was a general recommendation . The truth of the matter is, in order for me to determine exact amounts, I will need more information from you. I’ll send you a message and we can go from there. Overall though, that’s the jist of it.

good first impression and interesting follow up advice . . .

Don’t go for apple juice though. Drinking apple juice on an empty stomach can make you puke!

good first impression and interesting follow up advice . . .

Thanks B H, and, I invite all of you to ask me questions about fitness and nutrition. As a soon-to-be shamisen player, and a member of Bachido, I feel that a thriving community will share any expertise it has at its disposal in order to help others within said community. So, don’t be shy. I’ll answer any questions that may pop up.

Update!

Just came back from volleyball a few hours ago. First off, I’ll say there was a HUGE difference. Absolutely no fatigue nor exhaustion during pretty intense plays.

The previous night’s dinner was pretty standard (I did eat some eggs for lunch that day). For breakfast though, I ate a lot more fruit with fiber-rich grain cereal (complete with cappucino made with BH’s can of Izzo coffee!). And then before heading out, I wolfed down a few handfuls of nuts. :stuck_out_tongue:

For a more scientific solution, I should’ve just changed one variable at a time, but there ya go! It coulda been the heartier breakfast, or the peanuts after all. :stuck_out_tongue: (Or perhaps both!)

In any case, a very satisfying session today!

Haha, that’s good to hear, Kyle!

Now that you’ve tried out those sub-optimal intakes, call the pizza guy.

yes . . . pizza . . . in short the best way to go . . . I sort of gotta agree . . .

since you got a can filled with related beans at hand I am sort of mystified about why you would still call http://www.illy.com “Izzo” I mean is it downlooking on lower than bachido coffee or would that be your way of calling Jack Daniel’s John Daniel’s a la the cool “Scent of a Woman” Al the great Pacino movie as in having your own nickname for a coffee whose taste you find agreeable too . . .
