hi there

Sorry, it took me a couple of days to catch this! OMG, you are a PRINCESS!! Do you have DropBox? You can put it in a folder and PM me the link.
Hi all, in case it wasn’t posted before, this goze presentation shows actual video clips of goze performances, along with pictures, discussion, etc. My favorite is at 28:24, but there are clips at 10:16, 27:10, 28:05, 28:24, 29:58. Presentation is 56min long.
Also, here are old NHK recordings with more sound samples.
(this one has 5 clips)
I recently purchased the CD (mastered on Oct-1999) “Goze Uta”. Here is more album info: http://www.offnote.org/SHOP/on-38.html . And another song to listen to: https://youtu.be/6gKs-Iq-yFw . According to Discogs, some tracks were recorded btw 1958-1976; and others were recorded by the Goson Bunko Collection, Nagaoka.
Check out this link, Virginia.
It’s got some other Goze music files.
Hey, you changed your profile picture Chris =). I saw that link when reading through this old thread. Great stuff. I am just adding more stuff as I find it, in case others haven’t seen it and would be interested.
Oh heck, was it already posted?
Beg pardon. I stumbled on it on my own sometime ago.
And yes, I was slightly overdue for an update. Thanks for noticing.
Chris, no need to apologize. Not sure who posted. But definitely worth re-posting that link anyways. =)
You might want to check out Shinoda Masahiro’s 1977 movie Ballad of Orin.
Oh and for the Chikuzan Takahashi admirers (like me) you may want to watch Shindo Kaneto’s 1977 “The life of Chikuzan”. Nice little dramatic insight into his early life. Also a nice introduction piece where he talks and plays.
I’m blind, and I have no experience playing traditional Japanese instruments. The reason why I love traditional Japanese instruments was because I discovered biwa hoshi. When I discovered they were blind I thought “such a very fantastic thing!”. Then, I was introduced to koto music because of a friend of mine, who is blind, and plays koto. It was a very strange situation, because I felt like “resurrrection! :)”, when knowing there’s like a world of blindness in traditional Japanese music! For example, the inventor of juushichigen (Miyagi Michio) is blind! Virginia Chong made me watch a lecture by dr. Hirose Kojiro, who is blind, and he’s a researcher about goze. I suggest you to watch this, because I found it very very interesting. I think today’s blind traditional Japanese students/Teachers/players are very lucky!
I must thank all blind people who play traditional Japanese stuff!
Thanks for the movie suggestions, Neil! I will look for them, along with many hard to find movies. There is also a DVD documentary of goze, 1971 I think, but has to be purchased from Japan.
I have started reading Gerald Groemer’s Goze book and other articles he has published. They are dense and I’m slow reading through, but a lot of Japanese feudal history and many other topics are new to me so a reading curve. After, I will look for his book on The Spirit of Tsugaru and Chikuzan Takahashi’s autobiography.
