How to play western Music on the Shamisen?

Hi guys!

do you guys know how to play western Musik on the Shamisen?

Shamisen is a fretless instrument, which means you can play any music on it, as long as you are at the correct pitch. If you play on the western fret positions, then you can transcribe any tune you like. Fret markers or tape could be useful to help you know where these positions are.

so when i whoul to play a song i must find out the pitches from the Song that i whould play?

Yes. You can use a fretted instrument with similar scale length for reference and mark the fret positions on the side of the neck so you can remember them.

okay thank!

There were some pdf’s of various scales posted on here last year sometime. You should be able to find them if you search the forum.

Ok.

. . . is it safe?

anyway as for me I am not familiar with scales although I can imagine them to be helpful I just regardless could never come up with the motivation to seek learning rather if only at first theoretical things about music . . .

so I can only try to find the notes of a melody or chord somewhere on the sao . . . so just by ear trying to find the right spots . . .

of course this can be frustrating I am not particularily good at that myself but you know you can find the notes of the main melody or the main chords and then try to improvise a bit around that and you may also find additional notes that fit in and sound good and options for including typical shamisen moves like hajiki and may end up only rougly following the main melody and just that making it a cool cover version on the shamisen . . .

I guess in general one probably can’t play it exactly like the original or if you do play it exactly like the original it won’t sound as good as the original cause you are playing it on a different instrument so anyway I think a good cover version is also one that does not only sound good but also sounds different than the original I mean I am for example truly impressed by the completely different approach to a song as for this cover version . . .

as for shamisen cover versions of western music there are several videos on youtube maybe one of your favorite songs is already among them or you can get inspiration from others . . .

Great links…

This is how you play western music on the shamisen:

That windmusic link is great! I imagine that flute music would translate over really well to beginner players, seeing as it’s played pretty much one note at a time. I was looking at the baroque music links, and I think those would sound great on the shamisen!
