I want to buy a used bekko bachi, but don't know which option would be best for a tsugaru shamisen

What the title says. I found a seller on ebay selling used bekko bachi, but I don’t know which option would be best for a tsugaru.

I know that some of these might be nagauta/jiuta/minyo bachi, so I wanted to see if anybody could help me figure them out.

Option 1:

Option 2:

Option 3:

Option 4:

Thanks!

Hello.

Options 2 and 4 are both Tsuyama Bachi - a kind of large bachi made for Jiuta. They are very large and can be difficult to use if you’re not accustomed to them.

But they can certainly be played with.

Options 1 and 3 are more along the lines of regular minyo bachi. They are longer than usual for tsugaru, and lack the beveling we often see now.

But they are what the old masters used.

Thanks for the help!

I’ve had trouble as is trying to hold the plastic bachi that first came with my tsugaru, so I might hold off on the tsuyama if that’s the case.

Knowing that 1 and 3 were the ones used by the old masters definitely makes them more tempting just by how cool that sounds.

For now though I think I’ll just keep browsing and see if I find something better.

Thanks!

Certainly.

Depending on the size of your hand, some bachi may be too large for you to hold comfortably. Even then it can be quite difficult to nail the proper grip on a bachi, so if you have any questions please feel free to ask.
