I'm baaAAck

Hello there, it’s been a while! After a very busy semester of college, I’ve now got plenty of time to finally sit down, learn and play, and chill on Bachido again! And holy crap, there has been a ton of activity on the forums since I went AWOL; I have a lot of catching up to do! Oh, and in the middle of the semester I received my Shamisen in the mail! woohoo!

From scanning the new stuff I see (which by the way are very cool!), a couple of the pictures aren’t available/have typos:
The Nitta Naga Fukuro - #4 Picture 9
The Nitta Naga Fukuro - #6 Pictures 5+6

I also have a quick question about the Electronic Tuner. Now I totally understood the Shamisen taking a bit of time: making and it being sent from Japan and all. But I really need a tuner and would definitely prefer to get it in a relatively short amount of time. So does the tuner also ship from Japan as well?

You can pick up tuners from any guitar/music shop nearby if you need it right away. There isn’t a special one for the shamisen. Hope I don’t get any violent threats for diverting business from the bachido store. :stuck_out_tongue:
I’d personally recommend one of the clip-on tuners that snark makes, just make sure you don’t leave it clipped to the shamisen or it will take off the finish. I worked in a guitar shop briefly and those were always the recommendation. My friend also got one thrown in when he bought his shamisen and it seems to work great.

If you have Android or iOS phone, you can use apps for tuning.
Personally I use gStrings for Android. Works excellent.

Welcome back and happy reading

welcome back mate!

I’ll wait until I hear about the Bachido tuner b/c I’d prefer to support them, but thanks for the advice (and welcomes!) guys

Hey Nicholas! Glad to see you back!!! Are you in SJ now? We should meet/play sometime.

Yikes! Thanks for the feedback! I’ll fix those this week.

Yeah, Bachido has been veeeery very active. You have got several days of catching up to do.

Ah yes. The tuner is sent from Japan as well. I must say, it’s pretty cool. It’s designed for shamisen and detects which tuning you are in (niagari, sansagari, honchoushi).

Cool as it is, if you need one in a hurry, I’d agree with Eric and suggest getting one at a music store. My whole family’s into the Snark tuners (though I’m still stuck on the IMT-500)

Oh, I just realized that Luke’s been working on the Bachido website, so I’ll wait on making any site changes lest I blow something up.

Wow!!!
A special tuner for Shamisen that detects the Shamisen tuning you’re in!!!
Something else to add to my wishlist… : )
Does it also tune guitars, banjos, and other stringed instruments, too?

Yeah, Carlo Chung showed it to me. It was quite cool! I’m sure it can tune the other stringed instruments too, but probably won’t be able to tell if it’s in niagari and such.

That is funny.
I just watched the two of you in the Koma blogcast… : )

Kyle: MMk, thanks, I’ll check the market tomorrow for something but if everything is too pricy or I just can’t find anything I’ll get the Bachido one.

Yup! I’m was born and raised in San Jose, I just go to school in Portland (for the time being, I might transfer). It would be REALLY cool to meet you, but as far as playing, well, I admit that the amount of practice I’ve had on the Shamisen is proportional to the amount of time I’ve been on Bachido in the past couple months…that is, zero. Before things got crazy, I almost finished Lesson One. But once when I get that tuner, I’ll be jammin. I just watched all the Bachido Blogcasts before reading all the other forum posts I missed and I definitely hope to do something like your daily routine. And yeah man, it’s gonna take me a day or two to get through all these threads xD

If you don’t need the automatic string detector, then you will certainly be able to find a decent tuner for $20 or so.

Despite not having played shamisen in a while (I’m still rusty as well, after taking a long break to work on Bachido), let me know if you are ever in the area, as it would still be great to meet and even film a Blogcast episode.

Haha! Yeah, you’ll have your work cut out for you this weekend. I believe there’s been about 2000 posts since you were last here.

yes this was a nice little forum once . . . after catching up on everything that was already there I remember deciding with joy that I would follow it to read any and all posts of the future . . .

I am not completely sure I can still say I have read everything there is I mean this is getting more and more difficult  damn you Abbott brothers for having made this site so attractive . . . and thanks to the community for so many cool posts . . . even though it might turn out to be so many cool posts to choose from as for my reading habits in the future . . . which would also be not that bad a situation at all

Welcome back bro!
We definitely have to get you out over to Santa Cruz for a lesson then! Teach you how to tune it up and all the basics!
Don’t be shy, even if you haven’t played it at all, you will be loads further ahead then you would be on your own if you come over the hill and hang out with us some day!
As far as a tuner goes, I never actually knew there were electric ones… that’s awesome! I’ve always done it by year (and trust me, I’ve been out of tune for years as a result). Only now am I really starting to get a mastery of the tuning and the subtleties of the sawari, etc. Clip-on tuners are really great, and I’ve always loved the one I have for my guitar. However, ONE THING I will stress, is that you need to make sure that the clip-on tuner is actually BIG enough to fit onto the tenjin. I never used mine because it couldn’t open up enough to fit over it properly since it was made for smaller instruments, hehe. Now, I’m sure this wouldn’t be an issue if you were rockin’ some Nagauta or the likes.
Anyway, good to have you back brotha! Please be sure to come over while you’re out here and chill with me, Kyle, or the both of us!

Hahaha!!! Come on, Bernhard. Suck it up!
Actually, it’s challenging for me as well. Only once did I miss a few posts (in the Bachido Blogcast E12 thread) because there are so many long, detailed and well thought out posts being created in under 24 hours!

Truth be told, I still feel blessed with the situation. From what Papa says, there’s challenge in both failure and success: Failure being the struggle to generate interest, and success being the struggle to keep up with interest/demand. He admits to prefer the struggle of failure. Frankly though, I’m happy with the challenge of keeping up with enthusiasm. A mighty strong force you guys are!

After five years of struggling to generate interest in our karate club (see video), success is a nice change, and truly inspiring for near-future groundbreaking innovations.

So I was able to get a Snark tuner for $15! And actually Grant, we (me and the lady at the music shop) actually were able to clip it below the knot right on the nub (yeah I’m awesome at Shamisen grammar I know lol). But it is able to clip on the tenjin as well!

And haha, alright, I’ll let you guys know when I’m available!

Wow, very nice…
Maybe if you had a Shamisen Karate Club…
Some Kata practice, some Shamisen practice.
I think it would be nice…
If I was closer I would join… : )

LOOOOOOL While I was stringing for the first time in a long while, I lost my broken string virginity, specifically the ni-no-ito. The only other string I have is another san-no-ito I believe. So maybe we can plan that meetup sooner rather than later? xD

Marvin: Heheh, yeah. Actually, Papa used to encourage us to include shakuhachi, taichi or other elements to make it more enticing. We were so bent on doing traditional JKA karate that I didn’t even give it a second thought. Now that the club has been disbanded for over a year, now I think that might’ve been a good idea.

Might be fun to start a shamisen club there. Just need more shamisen.

Nicholas: Sweet! Congrats on the Snarky!

It had to happen. Soon, you’ll turn into a string whore just like Grant and Norm. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: (sorry, sorry)

Are you doing anything on June 16th? Grant and I are playing at the Santa Cruz Japanese Cultural Fair that day. Might be a good time to meet up?
