I'm new here and..

I haven’t visited the forums much as I’ve come to check out all the new shamisens and accessories that have been added to the store. But, I’ve been visiting this site for at least a year and a half now. Surprise, surprise at what I found.

Just recently I’ve found that Kevin Kmetz likes to stay here once and a while as well. That’s really cool because I first learned of you searching the internet for shamisen music! Although, knowing that Masahiro Nitta san is the God of Shamisen, I am a bit confused why you chose that name for your band :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Anyways, I’m extremely excited to get into the shamisen world of things, as well as Japanese culture. I used to play the alto saxophone and I’ll tell ya, I’m ten times more excited about the shamisen and it’s community.

Furthermore, Kyle Abbott, you rock man. He’s been messaging me back and forth for the last couple days, but being such the enthusiast he is I’d think he’d be too busy! Nope. I appreciate what you’re doing for us.

The main reason for this post, however, is that I’d like to find some individuals willing to mentor me. You see, I plan on going to Japan two years from now for a three week trip. I know the general rules of the Japanese language, however, I will need someone to practice with. No doubt, I’d like some jamming sessions when the time is right as well. I guess you could say, I am certain that I’m going to be an enthusiast just like everyone else here and I’d like to get to know ya’ll if you have the time.

Hey TJ Korth,

Great to have you with us here at bachido ! Yeah! To answer your question, yes! Shirakawa Gunpachiro was the legendary Shamisen player who originally was called God of Shamisen. He is indeed the reference that my Rock/ Metal band “God of Shamisen” is paying homage to. And as you perceive correctly Masahiro Nitta is actually in fact the living continuation of Shirakawa Gunpachiro’s Shamisen lineage . At one point his father Hiroshi Nitta was given the option of taking the very name “Shirakawa Gunpachiro the second” which would make Masahiro “Gunpachiro the third” . However the Nittas chose to stick with their family name instead.
This may seem unrelated (at least stylistically) but the reference to God of Shamisen was adopted much in the same way that Rap artists have sometimes taken the names of famous gangsters from the past and adopted that to their own act. (for example, 50 cent) It was also done a bit tongue and cheek as a way to create a larger than life Heavy Metal Shamisen act but with the intention of being somewhat comical about it (our shows often included cheesy human sacrifice rituals and other bombastic bloody metal theatrics).

To tell you the truth I had not met Masahiro Nitta yet when I first created that band and that whole Metal Shamisen approach. Later Masahiro Nitta and I began working together and formed Monsters of Shamisen. That was when I found out that he was like a direct living descendant of the original God of Shamisen. Small world I guess.

Anyway thanks for your interest in Shamisen and for your post here. I look forward to hearing you play someday. Hopefully in person soon! Ganbatte as they say in Japan! And …

Bachi On!

As We say here at bachido!

Welcome to Bachido Tj Korth!

Sounds good! Keep your enthustiasm high and watch the bachido blogcasts and read the forums and you’ll learn much here. Shamisen is my first instrument and i started here with basically no idea of how to actually play the thing, but the people here are very friendly and they are happy to help with all the problems you might face.
and i recommend you get Kyle’s book “Shamisen of japan” it is very useful in many areas of the whole shamisen but i think the best part is that it’s easy and relatively fast to learn many songs when you look at the tablatures in the book and listen to the songs here from Learning Center: Index of songs

So yeah “Bachi on!”

ooh and Kevin
it was nice to hear that story. I hadn’t heard where the name came for your band :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks fellas! It’s good to be able to speak with ya’ll. And, Kevin, great breakdown I would have no clue if left to my own designs. lol

Welcome! Hope you find some people to play with. It can be a lonely world when it comes to the shamisen

Welcome TJ,

Speaking of Gunpachiro, it doesn’t get much better than this.

As for what it says in the vid, I think Gunpachiro (dunno how I can know that :P) would appreciate the modern gods of shamisen (band).

Thanks Liam!

And, thank you for that video. Also very informative. It seems you’ve sparked my interest in the history of the tsugaru shamisen even more now. Goes googling

HOW CAN THIS VIDEO SAY KEVIN HAS NOT MUCH TO SHOW!!!

Lies, lies everywhere. Kevin is the new God of Shamisen for sure!

Thanks Shinji! But I have to laugh whenever I see that video. It was created by my wonderful and Amazing friend Ronindennis on YouTube. We used to get Soooo mad at each other and then we would create a war with each other on YouTube. Those were some wild times and this video is part of the longer story of our frustration from different points of view. Dennis didn’t like the way I always mixed in modern styles and I didn’t like how he was so stuffy and rigid in his thinking.

What’s really Hilarious is that he doesn’t even get that “God of Shamisen” is suppose to be funny (Rock and Roll comedy) . Truth is…I wasn’t even very good at Shamisen when we started that band . It was to honor Gunpachiro but it was also suppose to be kind of wacky and comical. But at the same time, as it says… We are ALL Gods of Shamisen just at different stages of self realization!

I have to say though, no matter the context it is quite an honor to even be mentioned in a video about Gunpachiro. I don’t mind the bashing from Dennis. It’s kinda cute actually. Makes me chuckle with memories of our epic YouTube “War” days. Fun! Too bad Dennis doesn’t join us on Bachido. I have a feeling he might be worried that if he and I end up on the same forum it will turn into “WAR” again (which…it probably would). But whatever, Dennis actually has some fantastic insights when he’s not calling me names and acting like a stuffy know-it-all. I actually do miss him though. A great musician and wonderful Shamisen player (he really gets a great "Chikuzan"tone) Hopefully he won’t stay mad at me forever.
