Koma Making Template

Heyaaa! I recently bought a jiuta shamisen and it did not came with a koma (there is a shinobi koma for sone reason, though; however, I don’t really want a muted sound ). Does anyone have a template that I could print out or is it something that I should ‘freestyle’? Thanks in advance :relaxed:

Hello Momoka san.

May I ask where did you buy your Shamisen?
And maybe post some pictures of it?

Thank you.

I bought mine off facebook :relaxed: and I already sort of made a koma lol, just not aware of its quality (also made a doukake and neo for it )

Thank you.

That’s a very creative Doukake. Kudos!

As for the Koma, if you are looking for the specific Jiuta sound, you are better off buying a Koma, as Jiuta koma are weighted.
But the one you made looks good enough for a start.

As for 3D printing a Koma, that is something I don’t recommend.
None of the materials on both types of printers are suitable for even a moderately close-to-shamisen sound. Wood is better, and Bamboo is much much better.

So if you would be keen on remaking your Koma, here’s a cheap DIY solution:
Get 4 or 6 bamboo hashi/chopsticks, sand the sides flat so they have sharp corners, then glue them together to make a thicker bamboo block.
From there, carve your koma in the same way you did your currnt one.

Thank you so much for the feedback! My aunt might go to Japan next year and I would definitely ask her to buy me strings, a replacement bachigawa and a koma haha. What do you think about a shari jiuta koma? The buffalo ones at Wagakki Ichiba are way too expensive :disappointed_relieved:

I just sent you a DM.
