Left handed "Shamisen(s) players"

I’ve been teaching my friend how to play the Shamisen - so far he’s been playing right handed because I can only play right handed.

He’s getting use to play right handed. But if your a left hand player - how do you rotate the instrument

What changes?

strings arrangement. . .
rotating the instrument (to seize in the arm rest). . .
how they play (striking the strings). . .

Maybe a video of showing how to to play for left handed players

Basically, reversing the string order and the doukake is all you need to do. Everything else is pretty much the same. (except for the sawari, but that shouldn’t matter much in the beginning)

well how can I teach him how to strike the strings. (I’m not a left handed player)

I’ve been teaching him right handed striking. (he’s got the hang of it)

It just that when he learn the guitar he played with left handed - even though he’s mostly a right handed person with everything other then playing an instrument

Striking the strings left handed is the same as striking with the right hand. The only difference is the hand.

If he’s naturally left handed, he should definitely play that way, as that is his “soul hand” as we say.

I mean he uses his right hand for everything else.

When he plays instrument - he uses left hand

Hmm, that’s interesting. Well, if he feels the most comfortable playing with his left hand, that’s what he should use.

Is it actually possible to have a post about left handed players without mentioning our old friend dmitris …

hmmm. strange. Is it just my computer or did that link totally not work? Let me know and I`ll try again tomorrow. Oyasumi everyone (good night).

There…it worked!

I forgot that Dmitris was left-handed.
He’d be the guy to ask about where to find the illusive left-handed bachi!

Oh snap! Dmitiris!!!

Gotta get that man on Bachido. (not to mention facebook. )

Oh, anywho. Yeah! Perfect example of a left handed shamisen player… who placed at the national tournament, no less!

I’m actually naturally left-handed but forced myself to learn right-handed… I wonder if I’d be any better right now If I still played left… Oh well

Stev,

You should definitely try playing left handed for a bit. It may feel slightly awkward at first (because you’ve learned the techniques with the opposite hand), but you may excel soon after because you are playing with your “soul hand”, as we call it.

Just switch the string order and the doukake! :stuck_out_tongue:

Well I guess I shouldn’t say i’m left handed…, learning to play right handed can be just as easy and comfortable. It’s strange. For activities that require more precision I use my left hand ( Writing, eating, etc.) while my right hand is mainly used for tasks that need power such as throwing, punching, pole vaulting, kicking.

Does this mean I am equally left handed and right handed? I feel comfortable in both in some things… like playing the Shamisen… I think it would be too late to start left handed anyway because I’ve completely adjusted to playing right handed.

I guess both my hands are “soul hands”

Ah. I believe the term is Ambidextrous. That’s an interesting situation. Well, bachi technique does require a bit of power, so perhaps playing right handed is good for you.

Basically, I feel it’s all good as long as it doesn’t feel any more awkward with one hand vs the other. Some people I know were told they needed to play with their right hand, and thus never felt comfortable playing. Once they switched, music felt more natural to them. However, other left handed players I know do prefer to play with their right hand. As long as it feels comfortable.

I should just master both for bragging rights… Like during a taikai I can switch Shamisen mid-piece haha.

That would be so epic!!

We’ll have to get you set up to fly out next year Stev, I’m dying to see that!!!

Stev you have to do that…seriously
