getting ready to take a few trips in the coming months, and would like to bring my shamisen with me. I’m curious if there is a point where loosening the strings for travel and storage becomes excessive before switching strings out.
Loosening the strings between playing sessions reduces the constant tension on the skin and the strings themselves.
Doing so will likely help your strings last a bit longer, particularly if you usually play at higher tunings.
You may also consider flipping the ni-no-ito after playing, to help spread the wear between the top and bottom. My teacher does this to maximize the lifespan.
ah, i thought it would have the opposite effect. thanks for the info, and ill keeps those tips preserve my strings in mind.
