What kind of cord is a neo made out of? Is there an “official” type of cord, and where would I get some?
I believe the pricier ones are made from silk, and less expensive ones are made from nylon. Shamisen in Japan says (p.13):
4mm tight knit rope

Pretty sure paracord is fine, and easily found. Or you could kumihimo your own 
I was looking at paracord, but it seems to be significantly stiffer than the stuff my neo is made out of. Plus the core is a different color than the wrapper/shell, which gives it kind of an odd look.
Silk or Nylon, depending on your dollar preferences.
