Nice article! Now I just have to wait until a faux bekkou bachi shows up under chukohin
Thanks, Bryan!
Oh… what is this? http://www.ebay.com/itm/12-Japanese-Shamisen-Bachi-Tortoiseshell-Bone-material-samisen-pick-kimono-/271235645875?pt=String_Instrument_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3f26e781b3
sniff sniff I don’t have that much money at the moment, and now it’s ending lol
Hey everyone! Kyle’s new article is GREAT! But I have to admit it gets a little lonely in the article section with just me and Kyle (Not that Kyle isn’t good company or anything… But…)
So If anyone like Gerry or Linda or even Aki (tenten) feels up for it I would personally love to see the articles section expanded to include more contributors!
Just my thought for today.
Bachi On!
Kyle - I saw that! I was going to snipe it, but I forgot at 6pm. oh well, I’d rather have a faux one anyway.
Update: That was weird - the auction ended and there was a bid on it, but then it was re-listed at the same price. I think they bid on their own items to drive up the price! I bought it anyway. I figured it was antique, so I’m not the one that killed that turtle, and that seller has a 100% rating on over a thousand items sold. The more sales you have on Ebay, the harder it is to keep your 100% rating, so I went for it.
Thanks for the advice, Kyle!
I second what Kevin says. If anyone has anything they’ve written or would like to write about shamisen (whether personal experience, tips or history), I would love to host it as an article.
Actually, Sid had written a review of Groemer’s new book. I’m just waiting for an author profile picture from him. Kevin, when you see him again, please remind him for me!
Congratulations Lorraine! No need to feel guilty. I know your heart is in the right place. I doubt any shamisen players actually feel happy about the material used in real bekkou bachi, but just use it because most everyone else does and that the technology to make a butter-like flexibility is not developed yet.
Thanks for taking the time out to advise me, Kyle. I know you were busy, so I doubly appreciate it! XOXO
You should check with Gerry to see if we can get his thesis on here. A more thorough guide to the shamisen (Aside from your book, kyle) cannot be found! It is an excellent read that I would recommend to all, and would be excellent if available to all!
Yes. Gerry is a truly Awesome resource for Shamisen history and various knowledge. Gerry if you’re out there , we really appreciate you here on the Bachido forum! Hope to hear more from you in the near future!
I third, fourth or any multiple on that! I’m so appreciative that Gerry is here. He has so much knowledge in all things shamisen and being active here gives so many people a rare educational opportunity which I’m happy is very appreciated by all.
Bryan! Excellent idea!!! Gerry, what would you say to having your thesis in the Articles section (or wherever else you’d like)?
Thanks, guys, I’m happy to share what I can about shamisen.
And sorry for the delay in answering - I couldn’t remember which thread this was in. I wouldn’t mind having the thesis up, but there might be a legal question about having it available on a website. Something tells me that because the electronic copy is available from a subscription service, we can’t just post it.
I don’t mind sending it to anyone that asks, so maybe we could put a short description of the thesis up in the Articles section, and then say "Anyone that wants to read the whole thing can send me a note giving me an email address that will take an 8MB file. "
I wrote you via about this via email, Gerry. Despite being completely ignorant of academia and a proponent of “Better to ask for forgiveness than for permission” policy, I wouldn’t think it’d be a problem considering that it’s your work. And if somebody does tell me to remove it, it can be taken down.
