New crash courses comin' up!

Hey everyone!

So, now that the bloodwood shamisen is done and looking sexy as a Ristretto, I can finally start making new crash courses. Tomorrow, I will start work on getting the set ready.

Here’s one question for everyone. In the Kuroishi Yosare crash course, I stick on individual markers for every position used in that piece, which are viewable in the Over The Shoulder view.

Well, I’m wondering whether to have the individual markers or not, so my question to you: Did you find those position markers useful?

Heyya kyle, Cant wait to see your latest work ^^
Markers will probably depend on player, some will learn without and not need them, and some will learn with and depend on them (or adapt and wont need them)

So do you need them? Or want them for looks ^^

Great news about new course.

Sure they are useful.
They help to ‘orientate’ more quickly while visually connecting notation to your Over-The-Shoulder demo. That makes it easier to follow the video or just to catch the melody if stuck somewhere behind.

True ^^ would be alot better for video’s i think, if someone were wanting to see your hand movements.
Didnt remember to consider when you did videos :stuck_out_tongue:
Still up to date waiting for your next trip to the coffee shop ^^ haha <3

Hello Kyle
If I find very helpful reference marks.
Understanding of and serve to keep the song

Kyle, if you don’t want to smudge glue all over your new shamisen, try making one in cardboard or something and paint the numbers with a black marker. Then you can tie the ends around the sao I guess. Just a thought :stuck_out_tongue:

I think beginners will want to see the markers.

Do a dual view where we see the over-the-shoulder mainly and then a smaller head-on view. I think markers for 3,4,6,9, and 10 are very useful to beginners.
I know with video it’s sometimes really hard to tell where the player’s hands are on the sao when youre trying to figure out the phrase they are playing.

I guess you could do progressively, use them for the easier minyou and then ditch them for harder pieces, as long as it was slow enough to make out all the notes properly. I would love to not need them one day :stuck_out_tongue:

Alrighty, the numbers will stay!

The day before yesterday, I put some clear paper-hole reinforcement thingys (that are put on the holes in binder paper to prevent 'em from being ripped out) as markers. One was a little off, and as I removed it, it pulled off some lacquer. :open_mouth: Wasn’t a big problem, simply dabbed on more lacquer. But still, I thought of all the stickers I’d be putting on in the crash courses.

Papa suggested using painters tape (which has little adhesive to prevent peeling off paint) for the markers, so everything should be fine.

Next question!
Set design! Any ideas? Everyone like the white background, or would prefer something else?

Maybe it’s time to try a green screen? Then you could be at a different place every time

Well, it might be cool to try out but perhaps a little too much tech involved.

why not… in the kitchen! theres a coffee maker and everything
haha, either painters tape or bondage tape whichever is easier to get ahold of, bondage tape has no adhesive and only sticks to itself though, hmm…
Also green screen would be cool to try out  i would say somewhere near the beach… but then there would be wind problems with mic etc

Hmm the beach… Kyle I’ve made up my mind. Shoot the next scene underwater.

Haha well… hes already shot one in the bath with him playing shamisen ^^

everyone who doesn’t have the book . . . do not repeat Kyle’s mistake of playing shamisen in the bath!

set design . . . at this moment I can only think of the obvious options of having a pamela anderson poster on the wall or an Illy umbrella in the garden . . .

green screen could be explored but Kyle’s head or hands moving around a shamisen floating in the air only held by invisible forces would be too spooky

I recall from a Roast on MTV that she is into animal rights. Kyle, don’t make yourself a powerful enemy by putting up her poster! Sorry BH

okay I don’t know why I suggested a poster of pamela anderson anyway when my favorite character was Jill (eaten by shark)

whatever I’ll let you guys get back on topic since spirited set design ideas seem to be eluding me at this time . . .

at this moment I can only think of the obvious options of having a pamela anderson poster on the wall or an Illy umbrella in the garden …

Are you referring to your own house, Bernhard? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I recall from a Roast on MTV that she is into animal rights.

That would be an ironic image with the whole bachi thing 'n all.

Hmm the beach… Kyle I’ve made up my mind. Shoot the next scene underwater.

Haha!! Oh, you know the official Bachido model shown at the front of the store? This is her regular gig - http://medusirena.com/
We became acquaintances several years ago because she had a shamisen needing a new skin. One of the things she always wanted was a waterproof shamisen so she could try playing it underwater.

Cana, Painters tape is a good idea, and would be very easy to get a hold of. I’ll go with that.

Being that there has to be room for overlays to go, perhaps a pure white background might be the best for the instruction portion? The performance portion could be in another room. (Ooooh, that’s when we need the Bachido hakama!!!)

Are you referring to your own house, Bernhard? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

what an insensitive comment thanks for reminding me of NOT having an Illy umbrella out on my patio . . .

. . . already the cans got some design value though and I call http://www.illy.com the best coffee in our solar system (at this time since I am of course awaiting the bachido roast

what an insensitive comment thanks for reminding me of NOT having an Illy umbrella out on my patio …

Ooooooooh snap! I had thought I remembered you already having an Illy umbrella. Egg on my face!

They’ve got some artsy stuff. Actually, I’m looking into cups. As of an awesome paying gig last night, the Espresso Fund is sufficiently funded for the full espresso cafe set up. I’ve picked out all the goodies except cups.

Must say, I’m kind of a fan of these simple thick cups - http://www.expressoshoppe.com/images/np/np_es_sorrento_brown.jpg

Let me know if you, or any other coffee nuts (like us) reading this, have any recommendations.
