Newbie here...

Just sayin’ hi…

After following Kyle Abbott for a while, and seeing how much what he has started has grown, I thought I’d join the Bachido community.

About myself:

Place of Birth: Salinas, California
Ancestry: Mexican
Current Domicile: Osaka, Japan
Occupation: English Teacher
Interests: Foreign Languages, Asia, Music
Instruments: Voice, Shamisen, Piano (By no means proficient.)

I learned Jiuta style shamisen during my year as a foreign exchange student. Currently learn Minyo off and on. I have experience improvising for Kawachi and Goshu ondos. I have zero training in Tsugaru style, though I’d like to start at some point.

I’m no expert in any sense of the word, but I’m looking to become one. Perhaps one day we could meet in person and talk shamisen.

Yoroshiku.

Joe

Welcome to Bachido! D:

jamie wasn’t supposed to post before me… thats cheating… :c

Joe,
Any chance you can join us up in Aomori this spring?

I second what Kevin asks! Your skill in jiuta/minyo should give you enough skill to join us with Kita no Hibiki. Team Bachido members ranged from beginners to advanced players, so you would fit in just fine. It would be great to have you join in the fun.

Would it be something you’re interested in? Feel free to check out the packet while you consider -

Hope you can make it!

It sounds like an awesome opportunity to get together with other shamisen enthusiasts!

This will have been my second encounter with Kevin. (The first was ten years ago, Sac, Sigma Project. I believe I made that event happen… )

Whether or not those days are open for me, and furthermore, whether or not my finances allow may disallow me from attending though… I’m all the way in Osaka and I’d have to either shink it up there or catch a night bus if available. We’ll be in touch.

Joe, When I lived in Osaka I used to take a night train up along the Japan sea to Hirosaki. I think the train was called the Nihonkai, and you get a sleeping bunk with sheets and a yukata. It gets you there in one night, but from what I remember, taking night busses meant one night to Tokyo and another to Hirosaki. If you don’t sleep well on busses the train is a good option.
Let me know if you want more information on this - I took that trip many times over the years, and kind of had it down by the end.

It would be nice to know about the Nihonkai… It comes back down too of course, right? :stuck_out_tongue:
