News Flash! American Idol Star Comments on Shamisen video!

Hey! Sorry for flooding the forum today with new topics…

I always find Bachido is an awesome place to share strange, exciting and crazy things that happen in regards to Shamisen and other related bachido topics.

In the past few days something totally wild “might have” happened to me on YouTube. I seem to have received a comment from Phillip Phillips. If you don’t know who he is, he’s a young singer/musician who made his debut on American Idol and has gone on to become extremely popular recently. he’s been on all kinds of TV shows and is doing huge stadium concert tours now. I think his new CD is selling quite well too and his videos get like a billion views.

I want to stress “might have” happened because, being that it is YouTube , there is always a chance that the comment is coming from someone who just wants to pretend they are Phillip Phillips and put up a channel acting like they are legit but in reality it could just be some psycho fan with an identity issue. Anyway the comment appeared on this video. My Shami cover of Phillip’s hit song HOME.

The comment came from the channel called phillipp20 . When I first saw it I didn’t think anything of it then yesterday a random friend of mine e mailed me and informed me that the comment was indeed from Phillip Phillips himself. So that’s when I checked the channel and was surprised to see his videos with descriptions like “here’s my version of this or my version of that etc…” and it was indeed Phillip. He was also thanking fans for their support in random comments.

What do you guys think? Are we indeed introducing Shamisen to famous “New” young musicians now or is it just some prankster?

P.s.

Seeing as how busy it seems you are right now Mr. Kmetz (referring to your other thread), I did a wittle wesearch for ya. Going onto Mr. Phillips’ official website, they link to a vevo youtube account, different from the one you posted. However, the vevo and videos were all made/posted after the channel you link to. And, looking at the video descriptions and comments of the videos from the youtube channel you linked to, it seems that was (and still is!) his own independent channel that he used to post videos and interact on youtube before he got a label.

tl;dr imo, and from what I’ve “researched,” that is the Phillip Phillips. I don’t watch any American TV really, but even I know about “Home”. Great cover btw

And something else I wanted to discuss that you touched on. I think that covering popular songs and bands helps spread the word/music of shamisen dramatically.

The best example I can give you is from two and a half years ago when Mr. Penny covered the “BED INTRUDER SONG!” The original video made by schmoyoho has over 110 MILLION VIEWS! And while it’s only a fraction of the views that the original had, Mr. Penny made a quick cover and video response and was featured at the end of the video, amassing over 2 MILLION VIEWS!

A bit more history here if ya got the time to read. At the very end of the video, Mr. Penny linked to another of his videos on how to acquire a shamisen. While for most of the video was quite depressing because of how few opportunities there are, he lastly mentions some guy’s book (I think his name was Nile Abb Bot?) on how to make your own shamisen. That lead me to his website: I purchased the book, later got an email about a new shamisen community forum being formed, and joined shortly thereafter.

tl;dr If a cover of a song brought me here, it can surely bring others! COVER AWAY!!!

And Penny’s version is actually on the bed intruder album on Spotify

Thanks for doing that research Nicholas. Yeah! I love covering songs that I enjoy on Shamisen. Right now I’m working on Number of the Beast by Iron Maiden!

far out

anyone aware of what that duo with shamisen that was in australia’s show ended up being they must have won . . .

Oh you mean Noriko Tadano on Shamisen right? From Australia? …not sure what happened. Tried to look it up but got a lot of vids in a search and didn’t have time to watch them all. She usually comes to Hirosaki though . So we will be sure to tackle her with questions and autograph requests when we see her this spring for the tournament !

Oh great! I looked earlier but only found random clips pand inconclusive info on where they ended up as for that show anyway they were cool!
