What Great News! This bachido site just keeps getting better and better! As a Shamisen player this movie literally changed my life! I used to rewind the close up shots of Masahiro Nitta`s bachi over and over in the scene where they battle in the dojo.
But the best part is that it is Hilarious! I was getting sick of every film about Tsugaru Shamisen being some stuffy documentary with melancholy music wafting in the background while some college prof. or Historian ranted about his own personal view of what Tsugaru Shamisen means to the “Japanese mind” etc.
Overdrive (Three String Samurai) is a fictional tale of a Rock Guitarist who is (literally) kidnapped and taken into the mountains of Tsugaru where he is inspired to learn Shamisen to win the love of a Girl and in the process has to face everything from a Shamisen playing ONI (Demon spirit) to Masahiro Nitta
(who plays his arch rival while he prepares for the ultimate Shamisen Showdown at the end of the movie).
However I always fast forward through the retarded Japanese soap opera-style nonsense and just focus on the Shamisen scenes. Many Great famous players make cameos as well.
And Akira’s pretty hawt. Just sayin’.
HAHAHA! well…yeah.
Masahiro always hooks up with the hotties. (In real life as well as in the movies)
Although at the end of the film he doesn`t exactly. . .
