Playing Shamisen on Sanshin?

Hello people out there,

A few months ago I came across the fantastic music of the Yoshida Brothers on youtube. Since then I started researching the shamisen. Eventually I decided I wanted to learn playing one. In Bachido I saw the perfect place to start. It was later when I found out that the shamisen is a pretty expensive instrument. But in the end I find art more important than money. Say I practice the shamisen for a month and I have the touch with the instrument. That’s when I know for sure I can start saving so I eventually can buy my own. Now the problem is that I live in the Netherlands. Hiring a shamisen is completely off the mark. Even buying can be a tough thing. So before I’ll decide whether I buy one or not I want to experience a little bit of the instrument.

Since hiring is not a option, I searched for a cheaper alternative that’s not too far away from the shamisen. I came across the sanshin on ebay. The sanshin wouldn’t be a huge investment and it does’t look very different from the shamisen. I know there is a difference as many members of the community state. Still I’m wondering if buying a sanshin would be an option for me. Could I for example follow the crash course on Bachido with a sanshin?

I hope to hear from you!

Hello, Davide! Welcome to Bachido!

The Yoshida Brothers have helped many people get interested in the shamisen, so I’m glad they peaked your curiosity! Yes, currently even entry level shamisen are very expensive.

The sanshin would be just fine to play with (it has it’s own unique tonal qualities of it’s own). It definitely can be used with the crash course, but because the scale length is shorter, you’ll have to rely on your ear to match your pitch/fingering with the sound of the shamisen on the course. But once you do and attach your position marks (explained in the video), you should have a great time with it!

Cheers!

Thanks Kyle,

that was all I wanted to know!
