Question - my first shamisen

Hi Bachido.

I’m about to buy my first Shamisen, has always loved this instrument.

In a month I will have the opportunity to travel to Japan and wanted to take the opportunity to buy a shamisen.

Watching some videos and comments, I knew Store “Shamisen Katoh” and I plan to visit.

Would appreciate your help to know what kind of Shamisen should I buy to start.

Thank you very much… and excuse my English, I’m still learning. XD

Saludos… from México.

Welcome to Bachido, Juan!

That sounds like a great opportunity!

It would depend on the tone you would like, and your budget. Nagauta tend to have a mellower tone, and great if you are interested in the older, traditional styles (not saying that it’s regulated to traditional styles only ). Tsugaru shamisen generally have a sharper tone, and in my opinion is more versatile, should you want to play other styles of music with it. Tsugaru tend to be a bit more expensive though, that’s the main drawback.

Please give my best to Katoh san!
