Recording

Hello everybody. I’m really stuck between a mic and a piezo pickup. Which is better for recording purposes? I’ve been using a cheap mic which I connect to my ipad and use an audio recorder but just today my mic screwed up. It made it sound so distorted and heavy. Any recommendations? I mainly use my ipad.

Thanks in advance

Hi Jasmine!
Maybe you can record from your iPad, using the voice memos app! I think it doesn’t distort the sound so much

It does a little. I’m thinking of getting the piezo and then connect it to a 6.3 to 3.5mm adapter and then to a splitter. Kind of like how’d you connect it to a laptop

E? E? E? E?

Jasman, I don’t understand!

Ah forgive me for my technical ramblings. Simply put, I’m going to get a piezo pickup and will try recording through it

Ah… please explain better

Sure, it’s like a disk instead of a microphone And it’s stuck on th body of any instrument, guitars, violins, banjo, etc. It only picks up the sound made by the instruments via vibrations rather than a microphone which picks up everything, outside noise etc

I’d recommend a mic over a piezo pickup for recording. I find pickups are convenient for live performances or getting a specific sound, but using a nice microphone will capture the most accurate audio. The way you connect the mic to the iPad will also affect the audio quality.

Great advice, thanks! I had a chat with my shamisen leader and he said the same thing too. But they’re still looking for the perfect mic. The mugen 21 is highly recommended for live performances or so he said
