Does anyone know if there is any CDs by
Rinsyoe Kida and where to get them?
Here’s one:
Here’s another by the son (?):
But who is Chida?
I think the romanization of the name has something strange…
If you don’t find it on Amazon, you can try CDJapan http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/ ; or you can check Far Side Music’s website and even contact Paul Fisher (in the U.K.) who might find it for you.
I was only asking who is Rinsyoe (Rinshoe) Chida…
Thanks alot
Andreas,
The first amazon link above is probably your best choice. The second link is for a CD by one of his students, maybe his successor, but not him. I have it, and it is fine, but just generic Tsugaru shamisen playing.
Every couple of years King Records releases a double CD with all of the good old players getting several tracks. Buy one of these if you want to hear the players of the 40s, 50s, and 60s (Shirakawa Gumpachiro, Kida Rinshouei, Takahashi Chikuzan, Oyama Mitsugu, Mihashi Michiya, Takahashi Yuujirou, and Sawada Katsuaki are all usually included). Be careful, though, King just keeps releasing the same recordings in different packages, so one of this big 2-CD collections will get you most of their stuff.
To get a taste, that first Amazon link allows you to listen to 45-second clips of most of that CD. Also, if you search for Kida’s name on YouTube, there are several full pieces there:
Here’s one with some heavy Tsugaru dialect before the song, which is kind of interesting in its own right, but the playing is also really strong. Kida popularized the heavy playing style that everyone associates with Tsugaru shamisen today, and some say he was a better accompanist than solo player, so this is a good example of what he could do:
For comparison, here’s an earlier recording, probably from the 1920s or 30s, with Umeda Hougetsu on shamisen, who is from the generation before Shirakawa, Kida, and Chikuzan. Solo playing wasn’t a thing yet, and the style was still pretty basic at this time:
Thanks, Gerry! I love those old records!
