Shamisen Composer, official thread

Hey,

So I’ve decided to call my shamisen notation software “Shamisen Composer” just to give it a name. Currently I’ve only shared this Kyle, Kevin and Masahiro, and Anne too.

What you can expect from the first live version is an online editor where you can save your composed songs locally. There will be a button where you can send your song to the webserver and it will return a mighty fine PDF for you to share with your family, friends, pets and if during the winter and/or the song turns out to be crap - your fireplace.

I want to offer some customizability since everyone have their own preferences regarding the layout and look of a PDF.

The PDF generation part for the standard look is basically done. I will be adding other fonts later. I should also include the ability to enter the Japanese characters for a song as well.

I inputted everything here from my online editor, and then sent it to the server to generate a PDF. These updates are not available for anyone yet, but will come soon I hope.

Anyways, take a look at what it currently outputs and come with suggestions. I have a long list of stuff I want to add in the future, so hopefully I have already taken most of your opinions into consideration, but go crazy with your ideas so that we can make this really awesome!

Having some trouble embedding, so here’s a thumbnail and a link where you can see the full thing.

This looks pretty awesome, I’m itching to get started on it. Seems like you’ve really outdone yourself.

What an innovational work you are engaged in, Karl (^∇^)

Karl you are a genius!
I literally can’t wait to actually try it!

congratulations! I am very impressed by what you have created. when is it available ?

Thanks!

I’ve got some server allocation to figure out before it can go live. Right now if I would put it live it wouldn’t manage a lot of simultaneous users. I might also have to add a user system to make to enforce usage limits if that’s a problem.

And I’m the process of moving and having vacation so I can’t make any promises. I estimate that it will be live within 2 weeks.

cool stuff…cant wait to it… i can imagine, everybody is going to start composing their own shami songs or transcribing old ones and sharing it…well perhaps we could create online bachido song where everybody would compose a section and it would all be put together into a one song…

that looks like a nice clear format and quite probably easy to use too.
well done, it’s looking good

I have no clue whether my server would be better than yours but in case it could be I would be happy to help out of course . . .

That’s cool! The server I am paying for should have no problems taking care of such little traffic that the small (but growing) shamisen community is. The internet is quite harmful though, so I just need to add some measures to make sure that the service will be available.

I think the PDF should be generated fairly quickly, and I can’t see how it would take more than 10 seconds if many users are generating at the same time.

okay and yes security is a top priority I’ve learned that the practical way when an earlier version of my site was hacked

Yoops, can’t believe I haven’t commented on this yet! :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s looking very awesome and pro! Karl’s allowed me to have fun with it, and I must say, it is already sooo easy to use! I already told Karl this, but when I was in Sapporo, Masahiro showed me the official program used for making notation. After trying it for a while, I thought, “Karl’s program is easier.” One of the best things about Karl’s program is that symbols/notes snap into place, whereas the official program requires you to align it manually (like I do), tedious and frustrating.

Oh yeah! When it is finished, I say we have a section on Bachido for user-submitted notation! (the program should have a way to easily correct notation in case a different user finds a note that needs to be added/changed)

WOW!!! Great!

Yes. I have had a chance to mess with Shamisen composer as well. It is indeed very easy to use ! I was having trouble saving the work and was waiting til I figured that out to start tabbing songs from the album. I finished a whole tune one time (Bach’s prelude…I know it’s not from the cd but it was good practice nevertheless) anyway when I was done with the whole thing I realized I couldn’t save it and that sort of traumatized from using it since then but no worries I’ll get over it and get back to using it again. I already feel comfortable with it!

I am going to create a login system soon and release it to the public. As a start I will ask the forum users here to PM me and i’ll set you up with an account.

But I am quite busy right now so I’ll see when I get to it!

And Kevin I still can’t see why you couldn’t save!

I hope you made public soon! thanks you so much for this!
