shamisen events!?

I was just contacting the tourism and events folks of the city and looking through the events page of the japanese embassy in austria and voila there’s a concert on october 8 in vienna and I might make the trip . . .

“Koden No Kai” group Bunraku without puppets show with members of the national Bunraku theater Osaka . . . 2 singers / narrators and 2 shamisen players and even subtitles via video projection and 6 euros that’s even cheaper than going to the movies . . .

since I am yearning to see a live performance of shamisen music (guess I am not the only one with that desire) I thought it would be cool if one could check bachido.com also for upcoming events and I mean infos about upcoming concerts worldwide

so of course I figure this would have to be a community based feature where users who happen to know about an upcoming concert in their area or other areas could do a quick post with dates and a link for more information - I know there are calendar widgets where users could mark a date and enter the info but I figure having it sorted by location would be as or even more important I guess an extra forum section could do the job too . . .

anyway this would be a nice feature and good for the community as in for example anyone wants to share a car ride from graz to vienna for the october 8 concert?

That’s a great idea!!

I had been thinking that it would be a good idea to have listings of shamisen events/artist performances happening, but assumed it would only be myself constantly updating it. However, I didn’t think about a calendar widget where everyone can do it! Maybe a google calendar?

Thanks for the suggestion!! I’m adding it to the priority list of new Bachido pages to be made.

Kyle

on my site I do a static events page cause alpine snowboarding events are quite overseeable as for their amount

so I am not familiar with calendar widgets and their options in detail neither as webmaster nor as user on whatever other site . . .

only thing unfortunately I can and would like to suggest is that location should have the priority over dates and be visible at first sight so who knows there might be some solution where one could filter results by date and location where people would have to select a country from a predefined list on entering event info?

or via the forum where people could include date and location already in the topic title . . . although this would require an extra forum section I guess but it would be nice anyway to also have the option of writing related posts like who could share a ride or meet there too . . .

and talking about events what about lobbying for the music we like I am going to write an email to http://www.lastrada.at which is a local street musicians and other street show performers festival in Graz I think they should contact some artists who might want to come . . . Graz was the european culture capital in 2003 and is a very nice city (just in case YOU whoever you are might want to come)

(unrelated shamisen and shakuhachi clip I just found below)

Truly a great suggestion.

So, I talked with Luke about it. He says that stuff should be posted in the local posts thing below Your Local Network. Any events (gigs, festivals), meetup announcement or anything shamisen-related in your local area should be posted there.

That was easy. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yes, this is because the “Local Network” section is already set up as a way to make announcements to folks in your area. For some sort of large event that folks might want to travel more than 200 miles for, you’ve got the forum, visible to all.

That will have to do for now, since I’m so busy with other projects. But I appreciate the input, and I’m sure improvements can be made over time.

It sounds like the desire is for such events to be globally viewable. This might work considering that there aren’t a truckload of shamisen-related events (yet). Probably calls for another forum section, though. And yes, it could be distance-sorted if folks enter their distance.

Thanks for the suggestion!

oh yeah sure the local network thing could be a good enough solution for this issue . . . easy indeed I hadn’t thought of that since “it’s kinda lonely here” so far

speaking of easy solutions I found the member search and browsing options somewhat inconvenient like a global name search seems to be impossible (jumps back to local radius results) and although zooming out and exploring the map got a nice touch an easily accessable overview list of all members would be quite nice too . . . one could maybe enjoy such options in case one could choose to set the maximum local radius to a global value for a while I guess . . .

whatever I had to force myself to even write this cause with your site being so nice already those are really just details and I like the site without them too . . .

Cheers

I think what you are saying makes a lot of sense too, BH. The site is super clean and nice, but knowing Luke as a perfectionist, I’m sure he doesn’t mind new ideas and nuances to improve the site’s functionality.
Having a straight down list (along with the global map), or a way to click on a country and view subsequent list of all the profiles within would be pretty boss. This function may be beneficial to those in the community who don’t have as much bandwidth or for mobile phone browsers who have a harder time loading the map. I know I can barely use the global map on my smartphone, for instance.

Oh, you can actually kinda do that, in a way. If you move the map to a certain area, click on the “View List” link. It shows all the members in that area in a list form.
