Shamisen Obsession with Wacky Jpop songstress continues...

Hello All of Bachido, Ladies & Gentlemen, Guys & Gals,

Just dropping in to share my latest Shenanigans . First a quick review/update for anyone who was not around back in March when my strange and somewhat embarrassing obsession with Japanese Jpop superstar Kyary Pamyu Pamyu first started. It all began when I was offered a gig at a junior high school here in Misawa, Japan (where I currently live). I was asked to play Pamyu Pamyu songs and almost cancelled the gig as soon as I heard the first example (an unreasonably silly anthem to fake eyelashes titled "Tsukematsukeru ") . I was truly appalled at how cheesy Japanese popular music had become and was determined never to be seen in public playing any one of her tunes…EVER!

Well obviously somewhere down the line I decided to bite the bullet and began learning her songs (I kept telling myself “I need the money!!!”) suddenly…without warning I noticed a complete change of heart and before long I had come to the conclusion that not only was Kyary Pamyu Pamyu possible to interpret on Shamisen, her songs were also irresistibly fun to figure out and execute !

Well one thing lead to another and soon I started to dream of Multi Shamisen versions of Ninjari Ban Ban and many other Kyary tunes.
(NOTE:A very Special Thanks to all Bachido members who helped make that dream come true this past May)

And now with the dawning of Kyary Pamyu Pamyu’s brand new CD titled Nanda Collection (as in… nanda kore? …kushon) I have been Revisiting my strange obsession with KPP.

Here are a few of my latest Shamisen covers of songs off of Nanda Collection …

I for one approve of this obsession XD
It’s so fun hearing how much people can stretch the boundaries of what people think the instrument can do and sound like

Hahahaha excellent!!! Maybe one day, I will have a shamisen Chatmonchy collection to rival your shami-pamyu masterpieces!

I love shamisen and Kyary Pamyu Pamyu’s crazy antics, but who would have thought the two would work so well together?

Also your multi shami cover of Ninjari Bang Bang was amazing!!! It made my ears happy lol

Sweet fancy moses!! These are great!

Wow! Mi み sounds like it was specifically meant for shamisen. Like it’s purpose of being created was to be played on 3 strings!

I vote that Saigo no Ice Cream or インベーダー (I thought that said “in bed” 笑) is the theme song for Team Bachido - Tour of 2014!!!

Haha those are cool although the earlier sentimental ponponpon cover and ninjari bang bang remain my favorites at least so far

The collection is awesome; NO SHAME.

I’m with Kyle. Your Mi cover is super fu-rad on shamisen! As well, Invader Invader hardcore rips! The crazy breakdown just makes it, dude, with your solo and everything.

Kevin you crazy man! Are you making the backing track yourself?

Amanda, thanks for the support!
Bryan, I look forward to your Chatmonchy collection!
Cody, thank you for taking the time to check this out!
Kyle, Haha! I don’t know if anyone will even remember these song by next year. So secretly I might be crossing my fingers that if she’s still around she will have some new awesome song that will get released just before May 2014!
BH , yeah I’m still quite proud of the PONPONPON ballad ! It started out as an attempt at being funny but ended up to be kind of surprising, I have to admit!
Adrian, I’m sure the soloing in INVADER INVADER was highly influenced by our cocaine orgy this spring! (Note to everyone … There wasn’t really any cocaine there, that’s just what we titled the video as a protest to all boring video titles!)
Karl, I use garage band as well as creating backing tracks directly by looping Shamisen into the Roland Loop Station effects unit! There are also some backing tracks already created online. Sean Mötley (he’s on YouTube) has created some backing for KPP songs as well as some of the most hilarious Kyary covers I’ve ever heard (Metal vocal cover of Furisodeshon etc.)

Thanks you guys!

Hey ladies and Gents,

Well it looks like I Just learned, played and uploaded yet another new track from Nanda Collection. It is the final track of the CD & is called Otona na Kodomo.

Happy Summer 2013. Everybody!!!

good one . . .

Thanks B H !

OK, So Just Now I recieved a message from Kyle telling me that he and some other (I’m pretty sure Bachido Members) just saw Pamyu Pamyu LIVE! All right that’s it! I demand a concert report/review here on this thread since the topic is already about KPP!
You guys who got to see her Live…how was it?
Details! Details! Details!

Yes yes! Adrian, Grant, Xander and I witnessed Kyrary Pamyu Pamyu live, as well as Tanaka Reina! (Which was a surreal surprise, as I used to be a fan of hers when I was 18)

As I just wrote you, Kevin, we were all thinking, “Kevin really should be here!!” We knew you’d have your shamisen with you plugged into a belt amp and playing along with her, maybe even getting up on stage. Anyhow, we both missed and felt your presence at the same time! Tsuke tsuke and Invader baby!!! I took a lot of footage, so it’ll certainly be on the next blogcast.

In the meantime, here’s a little snap from the video which captures the basically… it.

The backup dancers were incredibly awesome too.

Adrian! Concert review!

J-Pop Summit Festival in San Francisco and KPP on world tour this year oh my I know what I will be searching for and watching hopefully this evening and indeed I hope that Kyle would share some detailed report about this . . .

oh okay looking good

Yeah Adrian! Concert Review!!! This also gives me another reason to Skype you again! What are you doing 24 hours from now?
In the mean time as of this moment I am now just “One Song” away from having translated the entire Nanda Collection onto Shamisen.
Here is my latest upload . It’s the title track. Oh but of course I’m actually not playing in this particular video. It’s obviously my friend Ghetto Panda! Anyway, enjoy!

OK !!! THIS IS IT! Ladies and Gentlemen! I’ve finally done it! As of 8:00 pm last night, Japantime, I have now officially covered the entire Album… Nanda Collection by Kyary Pamyu Pamyu! I’m officially finished with Kyary Shamisen covers! (That is, until she comes out with a New CD) It’s been a Fun road and although there are a few songs from her past that I neglected to cover (simply because the cheesy factor was just too unforgivably high) I must proudly announce that I’ve now played and uploaded all of the KPP tunes I set out to do.

And so folks, Here it is… My final installation of the Kyary Pamyu Pamyu “Shamisen” arena . It is a profound and touching song about modern life in Japan and about riding your scooter to go reunite with a loved one!

I give you, my Shamisen version of “SUPER SCOOTER HAPPY!”

Kudos for the project Kevin

You’ve earned the right to wear the panda mask anytime you want. No questions asked.

Right On! I hate when people ask me questions while I’m wearing my Panda Mask!
