Shamisen of Japan (book)

Is there shipping cost for the book?

I see $29.00 (Buy it Now)

Ah yes. Shipping is about $4.85. Arrives in 3-6 days.

okay thank you for the information. I really want to learn how to play “Ringo Bushi”
Are there other techniques in the book that are not explained in the lesson 1-2 videos?

I’ve watched the video with the “nuki” and crescendo - (is that the 4300 phrases?) I looked inside the preview videos

Yes, there are more techniques (koma muting, sukui, suberi, advanced way to hold the bachi, etc), as well as several pages of technique refinement, used for honing the specific tsugaru aesthetic sound.

Yeah, the crescendo is the 4300 phrase.

okay just wondering. because I found this video of you playing Rokudan - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drMdiLuyIFo&feature=related

I really really want to learn how to play this song. Because I feel once I can play this song. most other fast songs will become a bit easier. To me Rokudan looks to advance for me. I’m not sure if my eyes or correct it look like you use Nuki technique to perform that song. and that suri slide from (middle string to the last string is confusing)

I really can’t wait when you make another Rokudan video (with notations breaking parts by parts) like with the lesson videos. You said you could do that if I’m not mistaking?

Rokudan is a difficult song in the beginning,

Yeah, I plan to make an instructional video of Rokudan in the same way as Kuroishi Yosare Bushi, when I have more time. In the meantime, check out Shamisen of Japan. In the book, you learn all of the shamisen techniques by playing through Rokudan. Admittedly, the instructions in SoJ are more advanced than I originally thought. But if you’re wanting to play faster and complex songs, it will be for you!

I had to admit - when I preview the book, there were some texts in teaching the techniques. I had a hard time following it. If I run into problems you think somebody wouldn’t mind demonstrating it (on a video) because when I looked in the book where it teaches “Nuki” I got confused by the index finger and so etc.

Sure. If you still have trouble after reading it, I’d be happy to make a video.

Does the book tell you how to make your own bachi?

It does. It includes a traceable template for the bachi.

Just got the book last week. Totally impressed. What a labour of love.

Awesome! Glad you’re enjoying it.

I do it for the enthusiasts!

Hi
I confirm what Matt said: I am very impressed by your book and that you are able to manufacture a shamisen by yourself.
Really, it’s good to have people as you to be able to make so different things (web site, buiding shamisens, training…). What is the recipe ???
When will you organise a shamisen convention where all shamisen fans could meet ???

There was a guy here called Sid who talked about organizing a convention in Ireland this summer, but we haven’t heard from him in a long time.

Thanks. I really owe it all to family, homeschooling and friends/connections. I probably couldn’t have done it without any of those.

Luke is the genius behind the website. Again, he’s been doing web design stuff since he was 7, and has a eye for design.

The recipe is espresso, of course!!

Ah!! The shamisen convention! So Sid wasn’t able to get funding from the Irish government this year, but thinks it might happen next year. Masahiro was also really excited with having a Bachido Festival in Hokkaido. He told me that idea when Bachido started. I wasn’t sure if it’d be feasible, but seeing how awesome this community (thanks to all of you!) turned out, I have no doubts it will happen. Maybe next year or the year after.

Some Bachido guys in America (SoCal and east coast) were thinking of coming to Santa Cruz this Summer. That might be a good way to have an impromptu, trial shamisen meetup. It’d probably be a day or two. Shamisen awesomeness followed by hitting the pub after?
That may be a little far to come from France and Sweden. Anywho, something official will happen in the near-future, I promise!

Oh he’s trying to get money from the government, if he can manage that that’s pretty cool. He should send a link to them where Mike Penny, Masahiro Nitta and Kevin Kmetz are playing irish traditional tunes. It’s awesome.

I’ve yet to visit USA, so I’m pretty keen on getting there. But there are so many places to go  I wouldn’t mind visiting San Francisco and Santa Cruz, but obviously its a long a trip so would be cool to have something more to do than 1-2 days. I don’t know though, I’ve heard San Francisco is a bit boring as a tourist city

Same with Japan, so many places that I would want to visit, and very expensive. But I was planning on going there sometime soon, so maybe its a good idea to combine it with some shamisen!

As you can understand a convention would be really cool to me, as I can’t find any players around here. It’s not like I can visit the Sushi restaurants and ask either, as most of the proprietors are Chinese…

haha chinese sushi I usually buy at the supermarket and its been a while at a sushi restaurant - well there is a japanese garden in san fransisco with a tea house and touristy or not we spent a couple of hours there enjoying tea and well a very relaxing environment and writing about 20 meaningful postcards that were stolen the next day when someone broke into our car and santa cruz is cool nice surfing options there too and in case you fly in to la the coast road is worth it with a rental car oh I just wish I had the option as in cash option mostly to visit again soon anyway I would say definitely worth a trip . . .

Yea! I’ve been thinking about a gathering of Bachido members. Except everybody has to come to CLEVELAND!!! LOL …whaddya mean you don’t want to?
