Shamisen on Ebay

Alright, now that I know that I can use a nagauta for various styles until I can upgrade to a tsugaru, its time to start the hunt for a nagauta that’s more affordable for my price range. Problem is ebay tends to accumulate a lot of junk and scam artists. Since I’m not that familiar with shamisen, I thought it would be a good idea if I post pictures on here of shamisen I might be interested in and bachido’s wonderful shamisen enthusiasts could give me advice as to the quality of the various shamisen I will be posting. Would any be willing to help?

P.S. Gary, I’m considering your chuzao nagauta as well.

Also, what is the sao’s width on a chuzao?

Approximately 1 and 1/16 inch.

And on a hosozao? I wanna know so I’ll be able to tell the difference even if the seller can’t.

I couldn’t find a way to copy and paste the photos on here so I’ll post the link at the bottom.

Anyway, its a nagauta with a 1" neck. Not sure if its a chuzao. If you find out, please let me know. Even though it needs a new top skin, its extremely affordable right now. Hopefully the price won’t increase too much as the bidding continues. Only downside other than the top skin needing replacing, is that it doesn’t come with any accessories so I would have to buy everything necessary to play. Any advice/info on this buy?

Sailorking’s shamisen usually get up to around $150.00 to $200.00. I think this one is going to go around the higher mark, seeing as the wood is in excellent condition. The doukake is really pretty too, and as far as I can tell, the sao is pretty straight. Don’t forget to include the re-skinning as part of your expenses, and you’re going to have to send it away.

I don’t know where he gets all these Shamisen! He usually has at least 3 at a time listed, and since he always starts the bidding at 99 cents, he ALWAYS sells them.

This looks to be one of the better ones I’ve seen. I’d definitely keep an eye on that one.

Thank you, I’ll make sure to do that

Oh, and you’re going to need a bachi, and a koma, too! I didn’t see those included in the sale.

Yeah, I’ve already calculated the bachi and koma cost into my budget.
