Shamisen on main stream TV in Australia

Hello Shamisen enthusiast,

Just thought I’d share this info, shamisen has made it to Australian TV with open arms.

There is a TV show here called “Australia’s got talent”(there may be variations of it in your own country). A duo, George and Noriko have mixed east and western together. Noriko playing the shamisen.

Here is their semi-final piece which has got them into the finals!

Some of you who have participated in shamisen competitions in Japan may have met Noriko or seen her perform.

This was their audition piece, the first time the judges saw what they were made of.

enjoy!

way cool I thought a while ago how cool it would be for shamisen to pop up in a context like this or any context on austrian tv so since I noticed nothing like that I’ll follow the australian show . . .

Whoa nellie!!! That was tight! Not simply cool just because it’s shown on TV, but how highly regarded it was. Kudos to Noriko Tadano for representing it well!

That is really encouraging. I hope we see more of that in the future.

The very first reference to shamisen I heard was over 10 years ago, on the classic sitcom, Frasier. http://frasierepisodes.com/season-9/episode-9/ (at 00:37))

The end was a little disappointing when they showed the “shamisen”, which looks like an old sanxian. Can’t blame them though. Shelling several hundred for a prop is a little much.

Damn, it can’t find the video file, I will need to dig deeper to find and watch that episode.

Now you’ve got me thinking, I wonder what other shows have referenced shamisens.

Whoa, this is way bad ass. Seems like Australia’s Got Talent seems a lot better than the norm.

I had seen a “Russia’s Got Talent”-like show a year or so ago, because one of the competitors was Oidupaa Vladimir Ouin, one of my throat singing idols. It was a little sad, as the judges all hit their “fail” buzzer. :frowning:
