Shamisen Shopping in Japan

I need recommendations on where to purchas a shamisen (preferably Tsugaru) in Japan. Several members of my taiko group will be traveling to Suwa, Tokyo and Kyoto in August. I’m thinking about having them purchase a “beginner” model in Japan and bringing it back. I assume the pricing and selection will be much better and I like that someone I know will see and handle the instrument before making a purchase. Between being new to the instrument and having a limited budget, I’m hoping this is a relatively inexpensive way to get started.

So I ask the forum, where in Suwa, Tokyo or Kyoto would it be recommended to purchase a shamisen from and what kind of price for a beginner model can I expect? Speaking Japanese isn’t a problem, but they won’t have tons of time to shop around. Please feel free to let me know if this is a horrible idea too.

I’m also concerned about bringing the shamisen and accessories back. Something tells me the TSA won’t appreciate the bachi in a carry on so any advice on that would be great. I’ve got a descent idea on what to look for in choosing a shamisen from reading the forums and articles on the site, but pointers there would also be welcome.

If the trip idea doesn’t work out I’m considering picking up and re-heading a broken shamisen from ebay on the cheap. I’ve got this book that’s given me delusions of grandeur and has me convinced I can build and/or skin my very own shamisen. Crazy, right? Thanks all.

I got mine from them. Very high quality. I used it in the bachido blogcast episode 6 to showcase with different koma. I’m sure Kyle sells good quality shamisen as well.
