Shamisen that are water proof!

Published on Nov 12, 2012
Ultra-Ever Dry is a superhydrophobic (water) and oleophobic (hydrocarbons) coating that will completely repel almost any liquid. Ultra-Ever Dry uses proprietary nanotechnology to coat an object and create a barrier of air on its surface. This barrier repels water, oil and other liquids unlike any coating seen before. The other breakthrough associated with Ultra-Ever Dry is the superior coating adherence and abrasion resistance allowing it to be used in all kinds of applications where durability is required. Keep your stuff Ever Dry and neverwet!

o3o stole the description~ but when I saw this video… I thought… hmmmm shamisen coating
Could be used on shamisen skin to keep it from getting wet at all. You could play in the rain… Ocean… or even Kyles fav… the bathtub

I dont really have the tools or commitment to get this to come to pass but lets see what happens ^^

Also use it on your case for your shamisen~ so the case cant get ruined in unpredictable weather.

juuuust cause my post number being 399… its bugging me… it needs to be an even number soooo… WOOHOOO 400!

Oh my gosh! Has anyone tried this yet? Would it effect the sound at all?

not to my knowledge~

^^ it would save alot of heartbreak from shamisen getting ruined in rain though~

ive had a scare with 3 drops of tea on my shamisen and i dont want it to happen again :stuck_out_tongue:

but no damage at all they were very tiny drops that left no mark or even signs of water.

my thoughts on this method, if there isnt a way for skin to remain in a safe state while being sprayed with the stuff due to the light pressure needed to do the multiple coats, then we may hafta try using a form of chapstick/ a coating to prevent spills without damaging the sound or the instrument itself.

Interesting stuff! Thanks for sharing this Cana!

Do you think it would work Kevin?

Only one way to find out

Since it can be used on leather work boots it might work on dog skin. But I think the sound will be affected. It might also destroy the skin over time if it sips out all of the natural moisture in the skin.

possibly yea Karl ^.^

from what I understand of the product having never used it myself is it somehow puts a layer of air that is constant around the item your doing~ forming a barrier of sorts… not sure if it could absorb the moisture for the skin but it would repel it definitely Best way to find out is to test it on several types of skin, cow, dog, cat skins by themselves and with the tension of the shamisen too and I guess sit an wait till it pops or something~ If nothing happens and its playable after without a change in sound I would assume it would be okay. ^.^

Its all up in the air though till someone is interested enough to try it.

I do not however have the tools or I would try doing it with similar materials… paper for example… if paper works and you can dunk it in the bathtub after and it still has the same old tearing sound when you rip it I guess… Would it change the sound? and if the sound changes would a shamisen with a thick skin on it change aswell?

Very interesting though ^.^

Daaamn that is incredible! No doubt the sound might be affected, but it doesn’t sound like it’s a desiccant (sucking out moisture from the surface), but just repels external liquids from the coating.

I certainly have shamisen and would be willing to try it out. At last, I can literally try taking a bath while playing shamisen! (Also, Medusirena Marina (http://medusirena.com/) has been dying for a waterproof shamisen.

Thanks for sharing, Cana! That is really interesting stuff! Any idea how we can get our hands on some of this? :stuck_out_tongue: If we all chip in a bit, I’ll try it on one of my shamisen.

Oh, here we go! The whole thing might cost about $150-ish. We have a sprayer thing.

Kyle!!!
Seems like both our dreams might be coming true soon…
Shamisen in the bathtub! FOR REALZ! Holy Cow!

This seems like a good cause to experiment really. Also… Kyle maybe your dad might want in on this o:?
some flutes if they aren’t properly coated on the inside with oils the spittle that can sometimes occur while playing could damage the instrument~ annnnd may later come to cracking alongside weather and bad treatment. Would this be a good thing to use to ensure the spittle etc that goes with playing wind type instruments doesnt soak into the instrument itself?

As a little addon to show it off

Seems to be about $130 for the top and bottom coat~ Looks like some interesting stuff =o

omg D: countertops sprayed in this would be soooo easy to clean…

not to mention hoodys/jackets sprayed with this would be invincible :stuck_out_tongue: (although it might discolour and who knows what happens in the washermachine~)

most important question ever… What the heck would happen to a surf board if sprayed in this stuff? would it sink? would it technically hover? (due to air barrier) D: and if it were in a cup… would the liquid technically have less space to move in? Would it actually settle in a cup?

What the heck would happen to a surf board if sprayed in this stuff?

Hmm… I wanna spray the hull of a speed boat with that. It would probably make it a lot faster. Or maybe a submarine.

I looked over their faq yesterday and I think it said they have not tested that out enough so far as for application on boats . . .

amazing stuff and can’t believe it might actually get picked up for waterproofing a shamisen that would be surely the most amazing application . . .

Test it on everything  Cana wants to test it on the inside of a cup x3
