silly question … why should I clean the strings with a cloth after playing? what is the purpose and the reason for this move?
I think it’s primarily for cleaning the top of the sao. Grime can slowly build up on the wood, so wiping it down after every practice will ensure that it remains clean. 
It cleans the ichi no ito as well. Grime build up in there can dull the sound as well.
