Supposedly, I have a jiuta shamisen. However, unlike the standard string sizes for jiuta, mine came with 17-1, 15-2, and 14-3. Is this a personal preference instead of a shamisen type indicator?
This is from Wagakki Ichiba, and is based on historical reference and player recommendations.
So it seems your combination of strings isn’t really a match for a specific style, but more of a generic set aimed at beginners.

Thank you so much!! Quite unrelated to my original question, but can I use a 14-3 string as my ni-no-ito? My silk string just broke and I don’t have any other replacement for it
Howdy.
If you just want to practice, it’s fine - but the sound and feel will be quite different.
Still, it might produce an interesting sound!
Give her a try
