Throat Singing

Well I didn’t know where this should go, so if one of the mods has a better place for this to go, move it or I’ll remake it, that’s completely fine with me.

Anyway, I saw in E22 of the Bachido blogcast that Kyle mentioned Karl doing some throat singing when it occurred to me that I too throat sing! I don’t do it terribly well, but I was wondering: of all the people on Bachido, how many of us throat sing?

For discussion purposes, my kargyraa is certainly the best (though my overtones are hard to hear and are rough at times), my sygyt is fairly good, and my khoomei is the worst. I don’t even want to try any of the more complicated techniques like chylandyyk, ezingileer, etc.

So, throat singers?

I wouldn’t call me throat singing just yet  What I need is someone to hear me sing and tell me if I’m doing it wrong or not. I asked Kyle about some pointers which he kindly added to the blogcast.

I most definately get the overtones and can play with them, but I don’t think my base khoomei is good enough.

Once I tried throat singing but that didn’t last long - I was told not to scare neighbors. “Isn’t that Japanese balalaika of yours already enough?”

Though someday I will surely go to a forest to practice some throat singing!

Just be careful not to make bear mating sounds!

Just be careful not to make bear mating sounds!

Hehe. Is that a common beginner mistake?

Well, I came to think about it from my own experience of making messed up sounds with my throat  Fortunately, I live too much south to have to bear with bears! (See what I did there hoho)

But of course it’s a legitamate advice! What fun is there playing shamisen without your arms?

Whoa snap!!! That’s awesome, Nick! Sounds like we should have a khoomei section as well!

Pat Deaton throat sings as well. We had a little duet in Sapporo on one drunken night.

Hahaha! I got a kick out of that.

Polite clapping

That indeed was an amazingly awesome night Kyle. It’s funny how many of the shamisen players we are finding who practice throat singing as well!
It was always something I enjoyed listening to growing up, and never expecting to see integrated so often!

Was that the night at Tomo sans ? I don’t remember that night very well for various reasons. You guys know why…haha! still it was one of my best nights in Sapporo for those same reasons! OH YEAH!

Well yes, I too am amazed at how many people we’ve met that are into Shami AND throat signing . Like Grant, I had heard the effect but never imagined meeting so many folks who could pull it off . My old band estradasphere incorporated it and then shortly after I met Kyle Abbott . wow! The cultures of the world are Definately merging! My hope for bachido is that as an “international Shamisen Society” we can help pave the way for a new view or paradigm of possibilities to create the music of today. I strongly feel that this very day… This week! This Year 2012, is a special time in human history and requires an honest expression of music that could only be created today.
Don’t get me wrong I am all for the honoring and respecting of tradition but I cringe when I encounter people who seem to think that all the great music has already been written. I’d rather live in a world where the greatest music ever written is about to be born and all the great traditions are simply providing the ingredience for something even more magnificent which we not only have front row seats to view it but also we ourselves, we who are alive and active today have the option, the power and the obligation to join in the creation of it!

Kevin: Right, I remember why that night was so good. It was my makeshift margaritas with CCLemon and crappy tequila. :stuck_out_tongue:

Truth!!

Hey Frezo!! Glad to have you on the forum! Man, it really does strengthen the throat. A positive is that when you get proficient, it feels like a massage inside the throat.
