Tips for travelling with shamisen?

So I’ve been on a trip away from home and I’ve already begun to miss practicing my shamisen not even a week into the trip. Though I regret not bringing my shamisen, I was very hesitant about bringing it as I worry about the safety of the instrument, and the last time I attempted to bring it on a flight, the shamisen was nearly unplayable for about a week after reassembly upon arrival. On top of that, my shamisen’s neck suffered some damage this past year and now I can no longer disassemble the neck into three parts.

So basically, I was wondering what kind of tips some of you pros out there would have when it comes to taking your shamisen places and keeping it safe from damage during travel. Specifically I would appreciate advice for bringing shamisen along for flights.

I currently only have a soft guitar case to carry my shamisen around btw. Is it worth investing in some kind of hard case for this kind of travel?

I wouldn’t fly with my instrument unless I was able to pack it into an overhead compartment in a hard case. I am considering purchasing/building a mitsuori case for this exact reason.

I do not trust airlines to keep fragile stuff safe at all.

The dou on board and the sao (mitsuori) well protected in a registered suitcase (among clothing) worked well for me. Was I that lucky ? Several times ? I am in Japan right now and will have to come back soon to France with a shamisen… Brrr !!! Those topics always make me afraid…

I found that ANA and other Star Alliance Employees in Japan are quite understanding, when it comes to musical instruments.
Last year, when I purchased my shamisen, I was allowed to take it on board with me when I mentioned it at the baggage check in (even though I had the dou safely packed in my backpack). Same for goes my irish bouzuki a few years ago (for which I had no hardcase), which has travelled a lot by now.

Pack your instruments safely, separate dou from sao and I think you’ll have no problems at all. And just ask nicely at the check in if you could take it on board with you or leave it with the flight personnel (like strollers and wheelchairs.)

Thanks for the helpful responses guys
