'Tosa no Sunayama' course is released!

Ladies and bros! The Tosa no Sunayama’ shamisen lesson is here! http://bachido.com/lessons/sunayama

Awesome! Slower, more solemn piece. But having pieces like this in ones repertoire is always nice for contrast with faster, flashier tunes.

Thanks for the hard work on these, Kyle~

Sounds good man! I wonder what version are you basing the video on? Is it a mix, or is it from someone specific?

I noticed I’ve heard many variants of this song from different players and recently noticed how in Akita Nikata Bushi, Agatsuma plays it in a more galloping rhythm than I hear from others. Really gives the songs a different flavour.

Thanks bros!

Ah, very excellent question! The version used in structured section of the course (that goes along with notation) is based on Michiya Mihashi’s version, which is my favorite. However, the version I play in the preview video is… a mix perhaps? It’s more feeling-based than following a specific version (which is what I emphasize at the end of the course). Indeed, that’s what I’ve been really appreciating about tsugaru style recently - how different flavors come out when a player incorporates their kimochi.

Diggin’ that mindset!

I also think that is the hardest part to learn these folk songs. As has been discussed before, there is always a minyo version of them where the singing part is what forms the basis of the song. Then people extend various parts and repeat parts and a person like me just gets really lost in what the basic song is, and what is only flavor.

Would be really cool if you provided either audio or video of a minyo version of all these folk songs as well. Are the videos divided into verses and stuff?

Indeed! That was the hardest part for me to really understand. Even more vexing when the singing part doesn’t match the shamisen part. :-S

Well, I wouldn’t be able to put on actual recordings unless I made it myself (as it’s for a semi-commercial purpose) I suppose if I linked to a youtube video, it could be done.

It’s just like the Kuroishi Yosare crash course, learning the whole melody one line at a time.

Ah right! I’ll ask Luke if he’s made the allowance thing to grant you access to the courses (a present to Karl for his hard work in making the Shamisen Composer)

Oooooh, waiting with excitement  Thanks!
