What is this distant relative of shamisen?

It’s all wood. Hollow resonating body with no sound holes. There are no indentations for sawari and the “nut” is bone. It has wooden “frets” on the body like a pipa. Other than shape and size, it has more things in common with a gotta.

Any guesses would be great.

It has some writing on the back looks Japanese with flowing characters.
