When people don't know difference between China and Japan

Hello,
A friend of mine recorded this track with a percussion ensemble. The song is called sakurai, here it is:

At the first listen, I thought maybe the composer of this song didn’t know Japanese music well… this song is more Chinese than Japanese
Discussion is open. If you think the same, let me know. Anyway, discussion is open and maybe I can be wrong…
Let me know

I mean, the scale used seems Chinese

There’s not much to tell based on the natural minor scale. The timpani plays scale degrees 1 & 5 and the whole piece is just I chord throughout. Instrumentation and arrangement is just western percussion; I don’t hear any ethnic percussion or specific ethnic elements involved. Basically there’s nothing “oriental” other than the melody.
It could sound “Chinese” or “Japanese” to one’s ear, depending on the context. I have been watching a lot of Japanese style theater shows lately, so this subjectively sounded “Japanese” to me. It sounds like video game music as well. I don’t know what else the music is trying to convey other than what you hear.

I’m agree with you, totally agree with you. I just heard that some people thought it was Japanese music, but they didn’t know about Japanese instruments!
