Kyle,
In one of your videos you made some white plastic Itomaki that were concave from round plastic stock. How did you make these? What kind of machine did you use?
Is there any way to make itomaki some other way using a machine that an average persion can afford?
Thanks
Ken
Yes!
You can shape it by hand,or use a simple grinder.
I believe Kyle used a bench grinder to make his. The traditional way would be to use a gouge chisel which should also work for plastic as long as you keep it sharp (check japanwoodworker.com). If you don’t want to use a large grinder a dremel tool should do the job with a round grinding wheel.
Hi Ken,
Yes, as Cody said, I used a bench grinder, as shown in episode 8 of the Bachido Blogcast. I combination of that and a rounded file (to make them concave.
Chisels are the more traditional way, but truly, most shamisen makers (even those who make super-high end shamisen) use power tools like bench grinders, routers 'n such.
Ah! How could I have forgotten about the trusty ol’ round file!?
