Who's Don Rickles?

Okay, so today I was with Grant Shamisensation Reimer and Adrian Crovetto. At the end of the night, they were reminiscing about the rap session at Fujimirando which ended in ‘dropping the mic’. I related it to the mic-dropping shtick of Don Rickles, to which Grant and Adrian replied, “Who’s Don Rickles?”

Once again, how old am I? I know this is an international community 'n all, but am I the only person who knows Don Rickles?

That is all. Goodnight!

I don’t know how old Kyle is but I do believe he “Kyle” is quite young as compared to me. That being said I am surprised that Kyle knows who Mr. Rickles is. Kyle you’re not the only one who knows Don Rickles, as I was old enough to view Reagan’s first inauguration. LOL…

I guess I, Kyle Abbott of Age 23, should be surprised myself. I dunno, I guess I found out about these comedians as they are guests on David Letterman. (But of course, Don Rickles has also been on the Daily Show, so technically even younger people should know him eh? )

I’m glad you know him too, Michael!

Hmmm… Here is a true, funny/embarrassing incident similar to topic here. Back in the fall of 1991 or spring 1992 I was in a public speaking/ speech class at the local community college my freshman year with about 20 students. One day half way through the semester, I can’t remember which; the instructor informed us we would be giving impromptu introduction speeches of public figures. So the students would go up in front of the class and the instructor would read out the name. Guess what? When it was my turn I stood up in front of my classmates ready but when the instructor read the name of Jay Leno, I had no clue who he was, now that’s surprising! My instructor and classmates asked don’t you watch commercial’s and TV? At that time , Jay Leno 1991-1992 was very popular, especially with the Doritos commercials and there was no internet as we know it today, just dial-up with one at a time BBS.

Hey Michael, for you and anyone else with taste - I mean interest, David Letterman was just on Jerry Seinfeld’s “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” (Yes, how did you know I watch that? ) It is very funny and interesting and certainly worth 20 minutes. - http://www.crackle.com/c/comedians-in-cars-getting-coffee

“You’re not drinking coffee if you’re not drinking it black” . . .

I wonder what Leno is drinking “. . . something from the lab, apperently” . . .

awesome thanks for sharing that I happened to notice letterman in 1994 on hotel tv during my longest vacation in the US and although there was another vacation later it was basically not before youtube that I could watch shows again and more often . . . only watched leno one or two times and was amazed about it being neither bad nor good just colorless compared to letterman or at least that was my impression back then . . .

 as for coffee I wouldn’t go as far as to say someone is not drinking coffee unless it is plain coffee I mean I aint disrespectful of playas whoz ass like ta add gin n juice n’ sugar or whatever but often after ordering a coffee to go at some simple place like a gas station I do (have to) confirm my order by saying “no thanks, just the coffee” . . .

“You’re not drinking coffee if you’re not drinking it black” …

I smiled when he said that. Though I do make cappucinos and such, when I drink drip ‘clean’ coffee, I feel the same way.

I do (have to) confirm my order by saying “no thanks, just the coffee” …

I say, “No, thank you. Just black as my soul.”

I say, “No, thank you. Just black as my soul.”

“black as the soul” I might never have said that myself but it is a common saying also in austria . . .

on that same vacation I also met an austrian girl on vacation in san francisco and she had just been to a nine inch nails concert there is a truly unjolly noticeable great line in one of their songs . . .

Gray would be the color . . .
. . . If I had a heart.

Oh really? Very interesting. It seems almost-verbatim phrases are shared across cultures more than I would think.

You’re killing me. You’re just killing me. Okay, here’s a question for ya …

(BTW, I did see Reagan’s inauguration - the first one & the second, and yes, I voted for him, too - in both elections … dont judge me …)

Who was the kid who INTRODUCED Rickles, and said “Be Funny”? He was a pretty big star at the time.

I won’t judge you… I would have voted too if I was just a bit older for his 1988 election.

Very good question, the child star was Emmanuel Lewis and I actually had watch a few seasons of this sitcom in the late 80’s. The show was called Webster…Ahh, the 80’s such a great decade and with BIG hair…

I had the big hair. Now I have a flatiron, thank goodness.

And DING DING DING - he was such a cutie, little Emmanuel. I confess I used to constantly mix up Emmanuel with Rodney Alan Rippy, which I also did in this case!

Uhm, Reagan’s elections were in 1980 and 1984 :stuck_out_tongue: and yes, I was old enough to vote in both of them. (Although, just barely, in 1980).

In 1988, that would have been either Bush or Dukakis. I think I voted for Bush. Don’t judge me.

Rite Lorraine , I had flashed back to there, the “80’s” for a moment and was all giddy, I think I was watching vintage legacy MTV videos confused by the Land of Confusion somehow forgot about Bush Sr. “88” election. But didn’t forget his notable framed saying “Read my Lips” remember that saying? ahh  My first Vote was 1992 and no it wasn’t Ross Perot.

sigh I was really hoping you were going to say “No, Lorraine, Reagent did indeed run in '88”, which of course would make me younger than I am, lol! Ahh, well. I was having a lovely evening anyway. I had forgotten about “read my lips”! Lol

Now, Kyle may be only 23 chronologically, but (having never met him in person) he truly appears to be an old soul with amazing parents. It therefore does not surprise me in the least that he has knowledge beyond most people of his age.

And - here am I, old enough to have voted for Reagan TWICE (don’t judge me) - and just learning how to play the shamisen! I must be crazy!

I just found this interview with him, so funny
