Wrist Surgery

OK…so my right wrist is about to be dismantled next week.

This means no playing Shamisen for about 6 to 8 months (maybe longer…it’s a military doctor). I plan to work on my left hand technique during this time and I was wondering if anyone had any good fingering exercises or drills that I could use to not only stay up-to-date but maybe even improve during my recovery. I have a problem with stretching for “long distance” notes at times so anything to improve that would also be a welcome bit of info.

Anyone???

You should be able to perform the 4-3-0-0 sequence and get sound without your right hand. Do that to a drum beat in different tempos.

If you have an electric guitar you can crank up the distortion and definately get sound by the left hand only. Try pull offs and hammer ons and bending.

Hope you get well! If you don’t mind me asking, what happened to your wrist?

damn that sounds like a long time . . . all the best for your surgery and recovery . . .

I hope you will alright soon! as you said, you can do left hand exercises. Play songs only with left hand. I suppousse you are right-handed so this will be very good for your left hand.

Thanks for the replies…and yes, I am worried that the recovery time will be LONG. The other issue, besides playing the shamisen, is that I drive a manual transmission car!!! haha, I guess I need to hire a driver to get to work (25 minute drive).

Karl…the injury is called a “TFCC tear”. I don’t remeber what TFCC stands for exactly but it is ligaments and fibrous-cartilage in the wrist or something like that.

. . . damn . . . a demand too far away for me . . .

edit: I just watched a documentary on rogue waves and also stumbled upon this clip featuring cars without a driver

BH…I was wondering if you are near Salzburg? I think that is the name of the city where Mozart was born. My wife is a HUGE Mozart fan and she wants to visit…any suggestions?

on the map you can see salzburg county in austria with salzburg city where mozart was born and the lungau region where I was born . . . on the little map of austria I have also marked the city of Graz with an orange dot where I moved to over 10 years ago . . .

about 3 years ago my parents moved away too and are now in Burgenland county along the eastern border of austria so we don’t have a residence anywhere in salzburg anymore . . . Salzburg city surroundings feature some lakes whereas the Lungau region is mountainous great for summer hiking and winter sports with several snow resorts . . .

as for the city of salzburg it’s been ages since my last visit (I did the military service there even earlier) I always hoped for a taxi ride but only got customers to vienna in the 4 years as a taxi driver so far

so I’m looking forward to checking out some of the touristy sights again too . . . a friend in salzburg and I are currently talking about a meet in salzburg, graz or both so I might finally do a salzburg visit again in a couple of weeks . . . so far and as far as I remember I can say the whole town is beautiful and perfect for a weekend or several days (for longer or permanent residence I prefer Graz) old part of the town along the river lots of nice old buildings and cafes for espresso great for walking around and you can also stop by and enter Mozart’s house in which he was born and lived! Salzburg castle on a hill can be visited also and overlooks the city . . . surely I could offer a couple of further suggestions on what to check out especially once my memory is refreshed by a visit in september

summer time is running out fast so I would suggest either going there very soon too for sunny days in t-shirt or possibly waiting until december and make it a winter holiday salzburg in particular with all the then decoration and markets can be a beautiful city to visit especially around christmas time too . . .

Yabai! That is a long healing time.
As Karl said, 4-3-0-0 phrase would be a good thing to practice. Also! What you can do to work on hajiki and make melody is to hold the note with your index finger and execute hajiki with your ring finger to sound the note. By sounding the string with ring finger hajiki and changing the note with your index finger, you can actually play long melodies. That way, you can also work on pitch precision too.
