Howdy y’all!

Your opinion matters on this question:

Out of these three words, which gives you the best/suitable feeling for Bachido?

Association

Organization

Society

It would be used in the context of: International Shamisen - - - - …

Society.

It’s earth-shatteringly important, so choose wisely!

『association』sounds most fitting to Bachido entity. I am interested in other’s various views.

If it’s for the mug/shirt brand I think Association gives it a little more weigth.

Society works better to attract more people as it is more familiar. What happened to Community btw?

Organization is just off the table imo. I don’t think people want to affiliate with that word.

International Shamisen Society of course . . . sure to also inspire sort of related blogcast options . . .

personally i think Society, as it suggests more personal involvement by actual people and not just a select few.
(community would have been my first choice but yes, society)

sorry double post

International Shamisen Society

The only problem with that choice is that the International Shakuhachi Society (a.k.a ISS, see www.komuso.com) has been in existence for a couple of decades, and so ISS in quite a number of hougaku players’ minds would probably bring up shakuhachi before shamisen…

I personally go for [association], with [society] as a second choice. (Association sounds like a group of like-minded people, whereas Society sounds a bit more, what should I say, bureacratic(?) than association…)

We can always fo for “Group Hug” as well!

And with that, Karl just chose the name!

International Shamisen Group Hug!

Ah yeah, I kept it rather brief. We were about to start watching a Midsomer Mysteries, so I was a little distracted. :stuck_out_tongue:

The purpose for this decision is just to finally get it settled. So far, it is used very little. The few times telling people the name (when describing Bachido) I’ve switched between Association and Society. Now that the title would probably be put on the shirt/swag, it’s time to get it decided.

This was first brought up when Luke and I were discussing the creation of Bachido (before the site was made). I said, “International Shamisen Association,” as I liked the real strong group feeling I got at the JKA (Japan Karate Association) However, Luke said “Association” feels intimidating, whereas Society would feel more people-driven.

I thought Society felt very weak at first, but as Bachido has very become very strong as a community I kinda agree now. Some big shamisen-promoting projects (Karl’s notation maker, Norm’s successful Bachido gathering) are started/led by members, not by Masahiro or myself. Thus, very people driven. Knowing that that some beginners have felt intimidated from joining in forum discussion, calling it Association wouldn’t make it friendlier in that respect.

However, Association would be very appropriate if we charged membership fees. :stuck_out_tongue:
Just kidding. That’s not something I want to see happen. (Don’t want to disrupt the creative flow that’s already happening with Bachido members)

Organization is just off the table imo. I don’t think people want to affiliate with that word.

Haha! Agreed.

International Shamisen Society of course … sure to also inspire sort of related blogcast options …

Hahaha!! The last video was funny.
I wonder how a skin would survive lift off. :stuck_out_tongue:

I hadn’t thought of that! Still, it shouldn’t be a big problem. International Shakuhachi Society is the name for that group, and so it’s shortened to ISS for ease. This group’s name is Bachido, and so International Shamisen Association/Society probably wouldn’t every be condensed. After all, “Bachido is the ISS” makes just as much sense as Bachido to one who doesn’t know.

Society sounds a bit more, what should I say, bureacratic(?) than association…)

Anywho, it doesn’t need to be committed today, so let’s keep the flow going.

I agree with Kyle that ISS will not be used by the members of Bachido as Bachido is already established, plus sounds much better than ISS.

Should some stray person happen to visit the shakuhachi website or arrive at the International Space Station asking “Hey, where are the shamisens at?”, they would still end up visiting something awesome in both cases

I think the “International Shamisen Society” phrase adds to the explanation of what Bachido is.

I still like ISS of course and would use this abbreviation a lot

on the other hand I gotta say I am not sure about the purpose or context or range of contexts in which a long name is to be used I doubt it would be good to have two names for one thing or if it is just to be used as a descriptive tagline for “bachido” on shirts or also on the site header I think I would prefer a simple and easy going and laid back and friendly international shamisen community . . .

Society!

I’m a fan of Association because it does give an air of concrete legitimacy. However it can go either way very easily; Association or Society.
As far as the ‘ISS’ goes, I agree with Kyle completely. If I we were all worried about our names being completely unique, we’d be in trouble. Probably wouldn’t ever decide on one! hehe

2. a highly structured system of human organization for large-scale community living that normally furnishes protection, continuity, security, and a national identity for its members: American society.

Just watched the last video there, and I really like it. I had no idea that’s how the space stations are set up. The part where he visits the Russians was the best!

Oooooh!! Very interesting…

That actually makes me lean towards Society even more. Bachido is an organized group of persons associated together for cultural purposes.

Being that we don’t charge membership fees nor have ranks, Association is less fitting because we don’t really have a formal structure here. Just mutual respect for each other (which I prefer).

yes society then as for me if there gotta be some other name than community . . . I was surprised what a “mess” the space station is like hardly any smooth walls or panels covering anything or so . . .

perhaps slightly tangential but could we open it up to other collective noun words? I wouldnt be mind being part of a Murmuration (one of my friends favourites) or perhaps even one of a Charm?

Call me lazy, but the “Lounge of Lizards” catches my eye.

The International Shamisen Lounge!
:-O!!! Oh yeah!!! Coming to an airport or nightclub near you! :stuck_out_tongue:
